En un gran avance para la salud de las mujeres en Nevada, una médica de Intermountain Health realizó la primera ablación por radiofrecuencia Sonata del estado para tratar los fibromas uterinos. Esto evitó que la paciente deba realizarse una cirugía mayor y les brinda nuevas esperanzas a las mujeres de Nevada que padecen esta condición médica común.

Sunwook “Sonnie” Kim, MD, médica obstetra y ginecóloga de Intermountain Health, realizó el procedimiento con éxito. Además, esta fue la primera vez que se llevó a cabo este procedimiento mínimamente invasivo y sin incisiones en Nevada.

La residente de Nevada, Nefertiti Nesbit, acudió al Dr. Kim después de que una ecografía encontrara un solo fibroma del tamaño de una naranja.

Para Nesbit, fue la respuesta a grandes problemas.

“No fue inquietante. Fue un alivio para mí. No podía sentirlo ya que no tenía dolor”, dijo Nesbit, mujer de 39 años de Las Vegas.

Nesbit había estado lidiando con períodos abundantes y debilitantes de forma habitual durante años y creía que así era como funcionaba su cuerpo.

Cuando finalmente se investigaron los períodos abundantes, se descubrió el fibroma. Entonces, la Dra. Kim comenzó a explorar todas las opciones para tratar los fibromas sintomáticos que afectaban de manera negativa su calidad de vida como madre y enfermera.

“La Dra. Kim me habló con mucha sensatez. Me compartió toda la información y me dio materiales para que me lleve a casa e investigue. Fue como hablar con una amiga”, añadió Nesbit.

In a major advancement for women’s health in Nevada, a physician at Intermountain Health has performed the state’s first Sonata radiofrequency ablation to treat uterine fibroids, sparing the patient from major surgery, and providing new hope for Nevada women who have the common condition.

Sunwook “Sonnie” Kim, MD, Intermountain Health obstetrics and gynecology physician, successfully performed the procedure, marking the first time the minimally invasive, incision-free, procedure has been performed in Nevada.

“This is a game-changer for women in Nevada,” said Dr. Kim. “Now, patients no longer need to travel out of state to places to seek advanced fibroid care. We’re bringing world-class, minimally invasive options right here to patients in our community.”

Uterine fibroids, also known as myomas or leiomyomas, are noncancerous growths that develop in the muscle tissue of the uterus. Uterine fibroids are a serious medical condition that are very common, affecting a significant number of women.

While some women experience no symptoms, others suffer from heavy or painful periods, pelvic pain, anemia, and complications such as infertility or pregnancy challenges, including miscarriage potentials.

Common symptoms of fibroids include:

• Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
• Painful periods
• Pelvic pain or pressure
• Frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder
• Constipation
• Pain during intercourse
• Infertility or pregnancy complications

Treatment options have varied, depending on the severity of the fibroids.  Treatment options for symptomatic fibroids include medication, hormonal IUD, myomectomy (removal of only fibroids), uterine artery embolization, and hysterectomy not involving ovaries unless indicated.

Now, the Sonata procedure represents a major step forward in gynecologic care.

Unlike those traditional surgical options, Sonata is performed transvaginally with no external incisions, preserving the uterus and fertility options. Most patients experience minimal or no downtime and can return to normal activities quickly.

Nevada resident, Nefertiti Nesbit, came to Dr. Kim after an ultrasound found a single fibroid that was the size of an orange.

For Nesbit, it was the answer to major issues.

“It was not unsettling. It was a relief for me, I couldn’t feel it as I was not having pain,” said Nesbit, a 39-year-old from Las Vegas.

Nesbit had been dealing with debilitating heavy periods routinely for years and believed that was just how her body worked.

When they investigated the heavy periods finally, that led to the discovery for the fibroid and to Dr. Kim exploring all options to treat her symptomatic fibroids that negatively impacted her quality of life as a mother and a nurse

“Dr. Kim was very down-to-earth speaking to me. She shared all the information and gave me materials to take home and research. It was like talking to a friend,” Nesbit added.

She chose the Sonata option, shrinking fibroids from the inside with gentle heat.

Nesbit said she was in very little pain post-op that diminished rapidly and 24 hours later, she said she was continuing her life.

Those heavy periods disappeared within three cycles. Now, her menstrual cycles are normal and she’s happy they no longer cause havoc on her life.

Intermountain Health’s Women Health clinics in Nevada have been on the cutting edge of advancements of women’s care for many years, with Lamarr Tyler, MD, performing advanced surgical options, including vNotes (vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery), for the state.

Dr. Kim has long been a pioneer in expanding access to advanced minimally invasive gynecologic procedures.

Her previous advancements include introducing robotic surgery in 2011 and vNotes in 2020.

Dr. Kim is recognized as a master robotic surgeon and a VNOTES faculty to teach other surgeons in the United States.

The growing number of referrals from other OB/GYN groups underscores the demand and momentum behind this new service.

“I treat my patients exactly the way that I want to be treated. With Intermountain Health, we ensure to have helpful informed conversations with patients and make sure they know that they are in control of their health,” said Dr. Kim. “Treatments should be individualized for each patient, depending on their symptoms, lifestyle, and preferences. Intermountain Health se asoció con el instituto sin fines de lucro Centering Healthcare Institute para ofrecer a las futuras mamás la opción de juntarse para un programa de atención prenatal grupal llamado Centering Pregnancy. 

Con la opción del programa Centering Pregnancy, se ofrece atención centrada en la paciente, consultas clínicas extendidas con enfermeras parteras certificadas y un grupo de apoyo durante el embarazo, el parto y el posparto con un formato “todo en uno”. 

En la actualidad, este enfoque innovador de la atención prenatal se ofrece en Utah en la clínica Layton Parkway Women’s Health de Intermountain Health, dentro del predio de Intermountain Health Layton Hospital. 

“Las pacientes de nuestras parteras desean tener una experiencia más comunitaria y compartida”, indica Leah Moses, una enfermera partera certificada y la directora de profesionales de práctica avanzada para el programa clínico de salud de la mujer en Intermountain Health.

Cómo funciona la atención prenatal grupal 

Durante el primer trimestre, las consultas prenatales se realizan de forma tradicional e individual: la partera atiende a la paciente en un cuarto de examen. 

Durante el segundo trimestre, entre 10 y 12 pacientes participantes con fechas similares de parto empiezan a reunirse en grupos pequeños para las sesiones de atención prenatal de dos horas. Algunas son mamás primerizas y otras ya han tenido bebés. Las pacientes pueden socializar mientras disfrutan bocadillos y bebidas saludables. 

Las sesiones incluyen un control individual rápido y privado para medir el crecimiento fetal, el cual se realiza detrás de una cortina y con una barrera de sonido para mantener la privacidad. Una asistente médica controla el peso, la temperatura y la presión arterial de las pacientes. 

Después de revisar a cada paciente, el grupo se reúne para una sesión de preguntas y respuestas con la partera. Se pueden entregar preguntas anónimas por escrito. Las mamás eligen cuánto quieren compartir acerca de ellas mismas o su embarazo. 

“En las conversaciones grupales, se puede profundizar acerca de diversos temas, ya que las sesiones grupales duran dos horas”, explicó Alyssa Lewark, la asistente médica líder del programa. “Las futuras mamás no solo aprenden de la partera, sino que también aprenden de las otras mamás acerca de inquietudes comunes, lo que es normal y cuándo llamar a la partera. Y se reducen el estrés y la ansiedad”. 

Para las citas médicas grupales no hay sala de espera, y estas comienzan y terminan en horario habitualmente. Las pacientes del mismo grupo tienen tiempo de conectar entre sí y, a menudo, continúan siendo amigas mucho después de la experiencia de atención prenatal. 

Durante el tercer trimestre, las sesiones grupales se realizan cada dos semanas junto con consultas individuales más cerca del momento del parto. 

“No solo se trata de hablar y enseñar. Participamos en actividades diferentes y actividades mediante las que las pacientes comprenden mejor lo que ocurre con su cuerpo durante el embarazo y cómo utilizar esa información”, declaró Lewark. “Explicamos las opciones de parto, las etapas de la labor de parto, las opciones para el alivio del dolor y demostramos estrategias para tolerar el dolor. Repasamos los cuidados básicos del recién nacido y practicamos arropar y cambiar pañales”. 

Las mamás también pueden asistir a las clases de preparación para el parto de Intermountain o las clases de lactancia para aprender más si así lo desean. Estas clases pueden ser presenciales, virtuales y por internet. 

El modelo de Centering Pregnancy se practica en 500 ubicaciones en algunos de los sistemas de salud más grandes del mundo y ha estado presente desde hace más de 20 años.  An Intermountain Health physician who has played a key role in advancing women’s health was among a select group of women’s health advocates and experts invited to the White House to celebrate the first-ever White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, which is working to improve women’s health across the country.

Last week, President Joe Biden and First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, invited a select group of women’s health advocates, clinicians, researchers, experts, investors and philanthropists to the White House for a conference to celebrate the program’s success.

Intermountain Health’s senior medical director of women’s health for Utah and Idaho, Audrey Jiricko, MD, was among them. 

Dr. Jiricko has played a key role in advancing women’s health at Intermountain Health. As an obstetrician-gynecologist, she has helped activate intimate partner violence screening and pioneer the integration of mental health screening in the OB-GYN setting.

Aside from improving patients’ health and safety, these practices recognize the holistic scope of women’s health issues and challenges.  

“We’re not only able to connect patients to resources, but also to find links between a history of traumatic stress and other health conditions like chronic pelvic pain,” said Dr. Jiricko. “It helps us look at each patient as a whole person.” 

That’s an ethos Dr. Jiricko has brought to her whole career.

She’s collaborated across disciplines to promote best practices in women’s health, recently leading the creation of Intermountain Health’s first Women’s Heart Health Program.  

Heart disease is the number one killer of women nationally, but women’s heart research lags behind research specific to men – as does women’s heart care. Statistically, across the nation, women who complain about chest pain wait longer to receive an EKG than men, and women who suffer heart attacks wait longer than men for intervention. 

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy – which include chronic or gestational high blood pressure, and the more serious preeclampsia and eclampsia – can affect the health of the mother and baby during pregnancy, and can also impact their long-term cardiovascular health.

Dr. Jiricko is working with an Intermountain cardiovascular research team to review health records from more than 200,000 Intermountain patients who’ve had hypertensive disorders during pregnancy.

The goal is to map what Intermountain can do as a health system to implement proactive care and prevent negative outcomes, including outpatient and in-home blood pressure monitoring during pregnancy and long-term follow-up afterward.  

“We have so much data,” said Dr. Jiricko. “We support more than 40,000 deliveries per year. It’s an exciting opportunity.” 

It’s all work that embodied the spirit of the White House Initiative on Women’s Health, which President Biden said at the event is intended to “fundamentally change and improve how we invest in women’s health.” For Dr. Jiricko, it was a reminder that the work she’s led and continues to lead at Intermountain really does make a difference. 

The Initiative is leading the way by allocating nearly $1 billion in funding from a variety of federal agencies to improve women’s health across the country.

“Every time I attend a national event like this, I appreciate Intermountain Health even more,” she said. “We’re doing great research, but we’re also operationalizing those best practices to deliver excellent care to our patients. Our focus on becoming a model health system brings it all together.”

U.S. News & World Report has named Intermountain St. Mary’s Regional Hospital in Grand Junction, CO among their 2025 High Performing Hospitals for Maternity Care. 

This is the highest award a hospital can earn as part of U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care annual study.

U.S. News began evaluating maternity care hospitals in 2021, rating hospitals that provide labor and delivery services and submit detailed data to the publication for analysis. Best Hospitals for Maternity Care assists expectant parents, in consultation with their prenatal care team, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity services that best meets their family’s needs.

Intermountain St. Mary’s Regional Hospital earned a high performing designation in recognition of maternity care as measured by factors such as severe unexpected newborn complication rates, birthing-friendly practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.

Intermountain Ladies Night Out events offer a fun atmosphere with interactive displays, health screening information and activities for women to hear healthcare experts, or opportunities to create something to take home. There will be healthy food options to sample from hospital chefs, free giveaways, prize drawings and more. 

The LDS Hospital Ladies Night Out event will feature a panel of four women’s health-related providers. Women can also get a flu shot at the event or schedule a mammogram. Women can also create and take home a succulent plant arrangement inside a mini pumpkin. 

Women will leave each event with an increased knowledge of health screenings or services they might need for whatever stage of life they’re in from adolescence to childbirth, to the postpartum period to helping to prevent breast cancer with regular mammograms, and through the ups and downs of menopause and beyond.
