Intermountain Health's Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program (RESEP), also known as the Downwinders Clinic, will host free public meetings across Utah to provide information about the recently reinstated Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) and help individuals determine whether they or a loved one may qualify for compensation.

The educational meetings will explain changes made to the federal program, including newly eligible geographic areas and expanded access for individuals affected by radioactive fallout from Cold War-era nuclear testing and uranium industry activities.

Attendees will have an opportunity to:

• Learn about the reinstated and expanded RECA program.
• Determine whether they may qualify for compensation.
• Receive applications and educational materials.
• Learn about the online application portal.
• Ask questions about eligibility and the claims process.

Individuals who have completed an application may also schedule a one-on-one review appointment to ensure documents are complete before submission.

The term "downwinder" refers to individuals who were exposed to radioactive fallout from atmospheric nuclear testing conducted at the Nevada Test Site. Many affected individuals and families live throughout Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho and New Mexico.

Under the reinstated law, eligible individuals may qualify for compensation through the federal RECA program.

Nine Intermountain Health hospitals were named to Modern Healthcare’s 2026 100 Top Hospitals list, based on an independent national quality analysis conducted by Premier, Inc.

Intermountain Medical Center (Murray, Utah) was ranked as one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals and was the only Utah hospital recognized in that category.

Intermountain St. George Regional, Intermountain McKay-Dee (Ogden, Utah), and Intermountain Utah Valley (Provo, Utah) hospitals were ranked among the nation’s top 100 hospitals in the Large Community Hospital category list. Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital was also ranked in the Medium Community Hospital category.

Intermountain Layton Hospital topped the Small Community Hospital list, being joined by Intermountain American Fork Hospital, Intermountain Alta View Hospital (Sandy, Utah), and Intermountain Riverton Hospital.

U.S. News & World Report has named 26 Intermountain Health hospitals to its 2026 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care for mom and baby outcomes, education, and patient satisfaction.

The 26 Intermountain hospitals earned a high performing designation in maternity care for uncomplicated pregnancies in areas such as cesarean sections in lower-risk pregnancies, vaginal births after cesarean-section (VBAC) rates, newborn severe complications rates, birthing friendly and education practices, and outcome disparities based on race/ethnicity, among other measures.

Intermountain Health has once again earned recognition as one of the nation’s safest health systems for patients, according to  the Leapfrog Group, a national healthcare safety and quality measurement organization that recently  unveiled its 2025 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. 

This national recognition highlights Intermountain Health’s commitment to the safety of its patients and caregivers by prioritizing processes to prevent patient harm and medical errors.  

Of the 20 Intermountain hospitals evaluated by Leapfrog, 14 received an “A” while six Intermountain hospitals earned a “B” rating, underscoring Intermountain’s consistent safety performance across all communities and a commitment to continuous improvement. 

The Leapfrog survey considered anything that could bring possible harm to patients, such as infections, medical errors, accidents, or injuries. The Leapfrog survey also examines processes and tools that hospitals have in place to prevent harm in the first place. 

It then assigns an “A” through “F” grade, based on the hospital’s performance.

There are also protocols in place that encourage caregivers to speak up and raise concerns if they see something which could put someone at risk, noted Dr. Camilio.

Dieciséis hospitales de Intermountain Health han recibido premios de liderazgo en calidad 2025 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, de Vizient por demostrar excelencia en la atención clínica y al paciente de alta calidad.

Tres hospitales, Intermountain Health Fillmore Community, Intermountain Park City e Intermountain St. George Regional, obtuvieron el primer puesto a nivel nacional dentro de su categoría.

A stroke can affect anyone at any age; however, they are less common in younger individuals. 

That is why when Krista Jenkins woke up one morning last January, her condition surprised her and her family.

“My dog was whining, and I called to her to be quiet, but it didn’t come out quite right,” said Jenkins, a 33-year-old mother of two from Fairview, Utah. “It was just like a jumble of slurred words.”

Her boyfriend, Tyrell Hammon, was concerned. 

Although Jenkins told him she was alright, he had recently had stroke awareness training through work at Christensen Ready Mix. 

“He was like, no, I think we need to go to the doctor,” she said.

Although Jenkins didn’t have many of the other common symptoms of stroke such as balance problems, eye or vision concerns, face dropping, or arm weakness, the speech issues in a woman so young caused concern for caregivers at Intermountain Sanpete Valley Hospital.

“Krista mentioned that her tongue felt swollen, so I checked but didn’t see that,” said Brett Johnson, DO, a family medicine physician and stroke and trauma medical director at Intermountain Sanpete Valley Hospital. “I asked her if her tongue felt numb and I asked her boyfriend if she was having a hard time speaking.  He replied, ‘Yes,’ and went on to say that she couldn’t get her words out that morning.”

Dr. Johnson, who was manning the ER, said they started looking at the possibility of stroke, but a CT scan of Jenkins’ brain came back negative.

After consulting with Intermountain Health’s Telestroke neurologists, Dr. Johnson told Jenkins he wanted to do an MRI which revealed the stroke.

“They got me right back and did two MRIs and six CT scans and found that I had had two mini strokes,” said Jenkins. 

She was immediately transported to Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital in Provo.

Jenkins described having two clots, one in the right cerebral hemisphere and one in the left middle frontal gyrus. 

“With the size of the clots, it’s a wonder I didn’t have more symptoms.”

Now in recovery, Jenkins is encouraging others to be aware of symptoms and to act fast if there are concerns. “Time is so important,” she said.

Quick medical treatment during a stroke is one of the most important factors in determining a good outcome. If a stroke does occur, there are treatments available to prevent long-term brain injury. These treatments are focused on restoring blood flow to the brain to prevent brain tissue from dying due to lack of blood flow.

The Intermountain Health neurosciences team is focused on saving brain and improving outcomes for stroke patients because every second a person has a stroke, 32,000 neurons die.

Treatments include a blood clot dissolving medication called tenectaplase (tPA) and a procedure that uses a catheter to pull blood clots out of large arteries in the brain. Both treatments can significantly reduce potential disability but are very time sensitive.

Strokes, which occur when a part of the brain is damaged due to a problem with blood flow, are the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. One in 20 adult deaths are due to strokes.

Intermountain Health experts say that, when it comes to strokes, individuals should “B.E. F.A.S.T” and call 911 when you see these signs:

• Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination
• Eyes: Sudden change in vision
• Face: Sudden weakness of the face
• Arm: Sudden weakness of an arm or leg
• Speech: Sudden difficulty speaking
• Time: Time the symptoms started.

An estimated 610,000 people in the United States suffer a new stroke each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. 

While some factors that increase the risk of stroke — such as age, gender and ethnicity, can’t be controlled — managing unhealthy habits, including smoking, excessive drinking, poor eating habits, and inactivity, can reduce your risk of stroke.

Jenkins expresses gratitude that her boyfriend knew the symptoms, and for the care she received at both hospitals.

“Dr. Johnson was really thorough,” said Jenkins. “I’m so glad he caught this. He was just so willing to look into it and go as far as he needed to get it figured out. The doctors at Utah Valley also said he was really thorough.”

Un nuevo estudio publicado en Journal of Perinatology, está ayudando a evitar las transfusiones de sangre en bebés prematuros gracias a una nueva investigación y colaboración entre investigadores de Intermountain Health y University of Utah.

Timothy Bahr, MD, neonatólogo e investigador clínico de Intermountain Health, colaboró con Robert Christensen, MD, y Robin Ohls, MD, de University of Utah Health, a explorar la dosis y frecuencia necesarias de una medicación llamada darbepoetina (darbe), la cual estimula la producción de glóbulos rojos en bebés prematuros.

Algunos bebés prematuros solo necesitan inyecciones de darbe, mientras que otros pacientes recién nacidos en estado más crítico también pueden llegar a necesitar una transfusión de sangre para ayudarles a mejorar sus probabilidades de supervivencia en la unidad de la UCI neonatal.

“Las transfusiones de sangre se pueden realizar de manera segura y pueden salvar la vida de bebés prematuros, pero conllevan ciertos riesgos. A new study published in the Journal of Perinatology is helping premature babies avoid blood transfusions, thanks to new research and collaboration between researchers at Intermountain Health and the University of Utah.

Timothy Bahr, MD, an Intermountain Health neonatologist and researcher, collaborated with Robert Christensen, MD, and Robin Ohls, MD, from University of Utah Health, to explore the dosage and frequency needed of a medication called darbepoetin (darbe), which boosts red blood cell production in premature infants.

Premature babies often suffer from low red blood cell counts (anemia), which can contribute to various complications such as developmental delays and difficulty breathing.

Subcutaneous injections of darbe have been used to effectively treat anemia of prematurity and boost red blood cell production in premature infants, to help decrease the need for red blood cell transfusions in the United States for the past 20 years.

The goal of the study was to refine the dosage and frequency of darbe to these vulnerable babies, so it provides optimal health benefits, along with the minimum necessary number of subcutaneous injections.

Dr. Bahr and his collaborators, who have been at the forefront of research on treatment for anemia in premature babies, conducted their study at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray and Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital in Provo.

The study tested two different dosing schedules: injections once a week and once every two weeks.

The results were promising.

"We found that while weekly doses of darbe increased red blood cell production slightly more, both schedules resulted in similar overall health outcomes for the babies," said Dr. Bahr. "This means that giving Darbe every two weeks could be a viable option, reducing the number of injections these infants need.”

“Fewer injections can lead to a more comfortable experience for premature babies and their parents, and it also could potentially lower healthcare and pharmacy costs,” he added. 

According to neonatologists, when darbe improves red blood cell counts to more normal levels in premature infants, they are less likely to need a blood transfusion.

Some preemies need only darbe injections, while more severe newborn patients may also need a blood transfusion to help them be more likely to survive their stay in a neonatal ICU.

“Transfusions can be done safely and can be lifesaving for preemies, but they do come with some risks. If we can reduce the need for blood transfusions in preemies, we can also reduce their risk of complications which can occur after a blood transfusion,” said Dr Bahr.

According to Dr. Bahr, the transfusion rate of premature infants in Intermountain Health neonatal ICUs is well below the national average.

Intermountain’s use of darbe and its ongoing research into best practices for the medication over the last 20 years are all part of an effort to reduce the number of transfusions preterm babies require.

“Eliminating unnecessary blood transfusions at Intermountain Health or ‘transfusion stewardship’ is much like our antibiotic stewardship efforts, which promote responsible use of antibiotics and reduces unnecessary use and enhances patient care and outcomes,” said Dr. Bahr.

“This research study’s findings offer a potential new approach to administering darbepoetin to premature babies, providing a balance between effective treatment and the comfort of fewer medical interventions,” said Elizabeth O’Brien, MD, senior medical director for neonatal health at Intermountain Health. “This is one of the many ways Intermountain is working to enhance the health and well-being of premature infants and provide more advanced and compassionate care for these very young and vulnerable patients.”

Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital is home to the leading Level IV Neonatal ICU in the Mountain West, and Intermountain has 17 other hospitals (10 in Utah) with a neonatal ICU. 

Providers at all 20 Intermountain Health hospitals with labor and delivery units in Utah have access to virtual neonatologists 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Intermountain Health is nationally recognized for the unique ability to provide this high-level of neonatal telemedicine to rural hospitals.

PROVO, UTAH – Con el fin de celebrar la gran reducción en las recetas diarias de opioides en Utah, los líderes del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de Utah e Intermountain Health se reunieron hoy en el Hospital Utah Valley en Provo para develar una gran exhibición visual que destaca este logro importante y todos los esfuerzos necesarios para reducir el uso excesivo y la adicción a los opioides en la comunidad.

Desde el 2017, gracias a los esfuerzos colaborativos entre los sistemas de salud, los prestadores de atención médica, el estado de Utah, las coaliciones comunitarias y los pacientes, se ha logrado una importante reducción del 41 % en las recetas diarias de opioides.

De acuerdo con la información de la base de datos de sustancias controladas de Utah, se observa un descenso en las recetas diarias de 7000 en 2017 a 4102 en 2023.   

Para conmemorar este hito, Intermountain Health y la campaña de prevención del abuso de opioides recetados a nivel estatal, Know Your Script, develaron una instalación con candelabro de 20 pies en el Hospital Utah Valley de Intermountain. Este nuevo candelabro simboliza el compromiso continuo y en curso para reducir las recetas de opioides en el estado.

Una versión previa de este candelabro con frascos de píldoras se exhibió en el vestíbulo del Hospital McKay Dee de Intermountain en el 2017 para representar las 7000 recetas diarias registradas en ese momento. 

Se volvió a actualizar en el 2023 para demostrar el descenso del 26 % desde el 2017, y la instalación actual destaca el impresionante descenso del 21 % desde ese momento, casi duplicando la reducción reconocida por los líderes en el 2023.

Con un rol crucial en este logro, Intermountain Health ha reducido la cantidad de píldoras recetadas en 13,710,955 píldoras entre el 2017 y el 2024 (una reducción del 45 % desde el 2017) con métodos alternativos para que los pacientes puedan controlar el dolor de forma eficaz. 

“En Intermountain Health, priorizamos promover la concientización, educar y hablar del dolor agudo y crónico con los pacientes para ayudarlos a vivir una vida funcional y de alta calidad”, indicó Nathan Richards, MD, director médico del Hospital Utah Valley de Intermountain. “Esta exhibición representa todo el trabajo arduo de nuestros empleados y pacientes, y todas las vidas salvadas”.

Para demostrar la importancia de la educación sobre los opioides en todo el estado, Terry Olsen compartió una historia personal sobre su hijo Dane, cuya batalla contra la adicción comenzó después de un accidente en un vehículo todo terreno en el 2007 por el que casi pierde la pierna. 

Después del accidente, Dane soportó años de cirugías y se le recetaron opioides para controlar el dolor. Por años, luchó contra la adicción, lo que  finalmente culminó en su fallecimiento por sobredosis de heroína con tan solo 25 años. El pasado noviembre se cumplieron 10 años desde que Terry perdió a su hijo. 

“Si esta labor salva aunque sea a una familia del dolor que nosotros hemos sufrido, entonces la historia de Dane habrá marcado una diferencia”, dijo Terry, que ahora dedica su vida a educar y apoyar a las familias mediante su trabajo con Changes Parent Support Network, Sobriety Foundation, Utah County Opioid Task Force, The Utah Opioid Task Force y la oficina de Survivors Council of the Utah State Medical Examiner.

De acuerdo con los datos más recientes del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos (DHHS, por sus siglas en inglés) de Utah, 606 habitantes del estado fallecieron como resultado de una sobredosis de drogas en el 2023 y el 75 % de esas muertes estaban relacionadas con los opioides. La proporción de las sobredosis que implican al menos una receta de opioides ha disminuido del 66 % en el 2014 al 28 % en el 2023. 

Se han concentrado los esfuerzos en el estado para reducir estos números, incluida la campaña Know Your Script, que cumple un papel fundamental en la educación sobre soluciones alternativas para la comunidad, y la implementación de estrategias de prevención con base en investigaciones.

Para apoyar mejor a las comunidades en crecimiento de los condados de Utah y Davis y para mejorar el acceso de los pacientes a la atención médica, Intermountain Health ha expandido dos clínicas de tratamiento integral del dolor en las instalaciones del Hospital Utah Valley de Intermountain en Provo y cerca del Hospital de Intermountain en Layton. 

Ahora más pacientes en esas comunidades tendrán mejor acceso a rehabilitación de medicina física especializada, neurólogos, fisioterapeutas y terapeutas conductuales. 

Ubicada en la torre Sorenson Legacy en las instalaciones del Hospital Utah Valley de Intermountain, la clínica de tratamiento del dolor del condado de Utah se diseñó teniendo en cuenta al paciente. Todos los servicios están ubicados en el mismo piso para que el personal médico pueda comunicarse mejor y coordinar la atención cerca del hogar del paciente. 

La Clínica de Medicamentos para el Dolor Crónico de Layton en el condado de Davis es una clínica independiente ubicada en 2075 University Park Blvd en Layton. También se diseñó para abordar la raíz del dolor, optimizar el tratamiento para mejorar el bienestar general de los pacientes y lograr un alivio duradero, una mejor calidad de vida y una mayor función. 

“Nuestra meta es trabajar como un equipo que tiene al paciente en el centro de atención, para que los pacientes se vayan de la clínica entusiasmados con la vida y no con otra consulta”, declaró Chris Gappmayer, director ejecutivo del Grupo Médico de Intermountain Health. “Si pensamos en nuestras familias, casi todos hemos necesitado estas especialidades o conocemos a alguien que las ha necesitado. Estas especialidades son, sin dudas, necesarias para la comunidad”. 

Estas clínicas nuevas son necesarias. 

De acuerdo con los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades de los EE. UU., casi el 20 % o 51.6 millones de estadounidenses padecen de algún tipo de dolor crónico. De acuerdo con las investigaciones, las personas con dolor crónico son cuatro veces más propensas a padecer depresión o ansiedad que aquellas sin dolor. 

Ambas clínicas se diseñaron teniendo en mente la comodidad del paciente. Cuando los pacientes salgan del ascensor o abran la puerta principal, de inmediato serán recibidos por un recepcionista. De este modo, no tendrán que estar buscando a alguien que los ayude a llegar a la consulta. 

“El principio rector de nuestras clínicas de tratamiento del dolor siempre ha sido la atención compasiva y colaborativa para todos. Para los pacientes especialmente complejos, se utiliza un abordaje en equipo para tratar el dolor de modo multifacético con estrategias de rehabilitación, psicológicas, de intervención y farmacológicas”, indicó Karen Harward, gerente ejecutiva de la Clínica de Tratamiento del Dolor del Hospital Utah Valley de Intermountain. 

Salas de procedimiento: las clínicas nuevas cuentan con más salas de procedimiento para administrar inyecciones guiadas por fluoroscopia, que son procedimientos eficaces de diagnóstico y terapia, y que se realizan con un método especial de imagenología conocido como arco en C. 

Con este procedimiento, los médicos pueden determinar la fuente del dolor o la molestia. Los cuartos están diseñados para mejorar el tráfico de pacientes, para que el personal médico pueda atender a más pacientes y proteger la privacidad en un cuarto preoperatorio y uno posoperatorio. 

“Al contar con técnicos de fluoroscopia y radiología especializada en el piso, tenemos la posibilidad de ofrecer a los pacientes procedimientos avanzados de inyección espinal aquí mismo, dentro de la nueva clínica”, explicó Gappmayer. 

Fisioterapia: en las nuevas salas de fisioterapia, los terapeutas brindan atención especializada para que los pacientes puedan hacer más con menos molestias durante el tratamiento del dolor crónico. La fisioterapia incluye la recuperación y el fortalecimiento después de una lesión o de una cirugía, así como terapia de piso pélvico para el dolor pélvico, la incontinencia y otros problemas con la salud pélvica. 

Clínica neurológica (Utah Valley): este espacio nuevo contribuirá con el acceso de los pacientes al permitir que el personal médico de Intermountain pueda tratar a más pacientes con diversos tipos de trastornos neurológicos y, al mismo tiempo, al permitir que el equipo trabaje de cerca con otras especialidades. 

De este modo, habrá más oportunidades de realizar evaluaciones neurológicas y cognitivas, y procedimientos como Botox, electromiografía (EMG), un estudio que se utiliza para detectar anomalías neuromusculares, y programación de estimulación del nervio vago (VNS, por sus siglas en inglés), que envía pulsos o estimulación en intervalos regulares hacia el cerebro. 

Clínica de accidente cerebrovascular y accidente isquémico transitorio (Utah Valley): la clínica nueva también cuenta con un espacio para que el equipo de Utah Valley proporcione tratamiento a los pacientes con accidente isquémico transitorio (TIA, por sus siglas en inglés) con poca antelación, identifique sus riesgos y comience un tratamiento inmediato para evitar accidentes cerebrovasculares en el futuro. Tener un espacio para trabajar de cerca con otros especialistas en neurociencias facilitará la comunicación, la colaboración directa y el diagnóstico adecuado. 

El equipo de la clínica de tratamiento del dolor de Intermountain Health también busca reducir el estigma asociado al dolor, mejorar el acceso de los pacientes a recursos para tratar el dolor y mejorar la calidad de vida de aquellos afectados por el dolor. 

“Tenemos la esperanza de que, con estas clínicas, contaremos con el espacio suficiente para seguir expandiendo estas líneas de servicio de modo que podamos seguir atendiendo mejor a las comunidades de los condados de Utah y Davis”, dijo Harward.

Ocho hospitales de Intermountain Health han recibido altas calificaciones a nivel nacional como centros médicos de mayor desempeño que brindan el más alto nivel de atención a los pacientes. 

Vizient, una empresa líder en mejoras en el desempeño de la atención médica, calificó a estos hospitales de Intermountain como establecimientos con mayor desempeño en la atención médica en su Estudio anual de calidad y responsabilidad. En este estudio, se analizó la información de 860 hospitales y se midió la calidad de la atención al paciente conforme a seis factores: seguridad, eficacia, tasa de mortalidad, eficiencia, enfoque en el paciente y equidad.

Eight Intermountain Health Hospitals have received high national rankings as top performing facilities, providing the highest level of care for patients.

Vizient, a leading health care performance improvement company, ranked the Intermountain hospitals as top health care performers in their annual Quality and Accountability Study, which looked at data from 860 hospitals and measured their quality of patient care based on six factors: safety, effectiveness, mortality, efficiency, patient centeredness, and equity.

A top performer designation in the Vizient study reflects a hospital’s excellence in delivering high-quality care. Intermountain facilities were ranked high in three of the four categories.

Nine Intermountain Health hospitals have been named to Newsweek’s 2024 rankings of the World's Best Hospitals. 

The prestigious list aims to highlight the best facilities each year by using a mix of methodology that evaluates quality and safety measures meant to provide a guide for patients and families in choosing healthcare services in their communities. 

Newsweek looked at data from 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries to compile their list. The final scores were based on surveys from medical experts, patient/doctor ratios, and patient satisfaction surveys, among other metrics. 

“Intermountain is honored to be included among this premier list of hospitals,” said Rob Allen, president and CEO of Intermountain Health. “It represents the tireless work of our caregivers and their focus on exceptional and compassionate patient care.”
