The Las Vegas Raiders and Intermountain Health today announced a $25 million gift to help build Nevada's first stand-alone children's hospital. 

The gift was led by Raiders owners Mark Davis, Egon Durban, and Michael Meldman – each of whom contributed $5 million toward the development – and the Raiders, which committed the additional $10 million.

“The Las Vegas Raiders are making our largest philanthropic commitment in franchise history because we are dedicated to building a healthier future for kids in Nevada,” said Mark Davis, owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. “We want this gift to remind children and families that they have our team backing them and that the support of the entire Raider Nation is in their corner.”  

The hospital, located at the UNLV Harry Reid Research and Technology Park, will be the first of its kind in Nevada, anchoring a new future for kids and families across the state and delivering comprehensive, high-acuity pediatric care. 

The 828,000 square-foot standalone children’s hospital will be located on a 33-acre campus and feature 180 patient beds, with room to grow. It will provide advanced emergency services designed specifically for children and a full spectrum outpatient center alongside inpatient and specialty care. 

“The Raiders are committed to excellence, and this gift is a generational investment that will keep families closer, strengthen our community, and give every kid every chance to thrive," said Mitch Cloward, Intermountain Health region president.

In recognition of this landmark gift, Intermountain Health Nevada Children’s Hospital’s physical therapy and rehabilitation space, along with its bistro – spaces designed for healing and recovery, will be named in the Raiders’ honor.

The future Las Vegas Raiders Bistro, located adjacent to the hospital’s main lobby, will provide nourishment, comfort, and a moment of respite for families. This will be a space where caregivers and parents navigating the complexities of having a child in the hospital can pause. Whether gathering strength for the next conversation, sharing a quiet meal, or seeking a moment of normalcy, families will find support here. 

"Sports remind us that we do our best when we have the right team around us," said Michael Meldman. "Families deserve to feel supported every step of the way. In addition to the experts at Intermountain Health, the Raiders family stands with our community's kids.”

The Las Vegas Raiders Inpatient Rehab Gym will help children heal, grow stronger, and regain confidence through movement and play. Purposefully created to be both innovative and whimsical, the space will feature advanced therapeutic equipment alongside playful design elements. Here, therapy will feel empowering and fun, while supporting physical recovery, nurturing resilience, independence, and joy. 

The Raiders’ commitment to children’s health helps make every developmental milestone possible.

Intermountain Health has been the official healthcare partner of the Las Vegas Raiders since 2019. Construction is expected to start on the hospital in the coming months, with an anticipated opening date in 2030.

The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust has committed $20 million to Intermountain Health to expand pediatric behavioral health specialty services in Nevada — one of the largest philanthropic investments of its kind in the state’s history.

The commitment will support the expansion of world-class pediatric behavioral health services, addressing gaps in access to advanced specialty care within Nevada. This commitment also represents significant progress toward ensuring children receive the care they need within their own community.

This collaboration reflects a shared belief between two mission-driven nonprofits: that access to high-quality care should never depend on a family’s ZIP code.

The Helmsley Charitable Trust has made a sustained, multiyear commitment to strengthening Nevada’s healthcare landscape, including prior grants that expanded access to life‑saving ECMO technology, which provides temporary heart and lung support for critically ill patients, across the state. 

Intermountain Health, which has been recognized nationally for excellence in pediatric care and backed by more than a century of children’s hospital expertise, is establishing the groundwork to extend this high standard of healthcare to families in Nevada. This includes a campus with comprehensive world-class services, featuring a 826,600-square-foot standalone children’s hospital.

Walter Panzirer, a Trustee of the Helmsley Charitable Trust, announced the $20 million commitment, which will support a comprehensive behavioral health care model that will expand access, improve continuity of care, and deliver evidence-based treatment across the full continuum of pediatric mental health. 

This commitment will help bring world-class pediatric behavioral healthcare to Nevada, ensuring families can stay together in their community during times of medical crisis.

Youth in southern Nevada will benefit from a comprehensive behavioral healthcare system, Panzirer said. The funding will help establish a centralized continuum of care that ensures patient access to top-notch services and practitioners.

“Many of our children and adolescents navigate behavioral issues, including anger, anxiety, and depression,” Panzirer said. “By providing youth access to equitable and developmentally appropriate services closer to home, Intermountain will strengthen early intervention and reduce reliance on emergency and inpatient care.”

Building on that commitment, Intermountain leaders emphasized how the funding accelerates the community’s momentum to broaden access to advanced pediatric services.

The campaign aims to advance Intermountain’s broader initiative to build a full continuum of pediatric specialty care across the region. By doing so, Intermountain will help keep families together during times of medical crisis and improve health outcomes.

Intermountain Health ha publicado su nueva Evaluación de las Necesidades de Salud Comunitaria (CHNA, por sus siglas en inglés) y las Estrategias de Implementación de Salud Comunitaria (CHIS, por sus siglas en inglés) para Nevada, en las que identifica dónde se encuentran las mayores necesidades de atención médica para las comunidades y las acciones que se deben tomar para mejorar la salud comunitaria.

El nuevo informe de la evaluación indicó que las necesidades de salud más significativas en el condado de Clark son mejorar el acceso a la atención médica conductual, invertir en factores sociales (como vivienda, alimentos y seguridad), aumentar el acceso a la atención y prevenir lesiones y enfermedades infantiles.

"Estas evaluaciones son un proceso basado en datos que nos ayuda a priorizar las necesidades de salud y luego a tomar medidas", dijo Lisa Nichols, vicepresidenta de salud comunitaria en Intermountain Health. Intermountain Health has published its new Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) and the Community Health Implementation Strategies (CHIS) for Nevada, identifying where the greatest healthcare needs for the communities and the actions that must be taken to enhance community health.

The new assessment report found the most significant health needs in Clark County are: improvement in access to behavioral health care, invest in social drivers (such as housing, food, and safety), increase access to care, and preventing childhood injury and illness.

“These assessments are a data-driven process to help us prioritize health needs and then take action” said Lisa Nichols, vice president of community health at Intermountain Health. “By combining data with personal insight, we can focus our efforts where Intermountain Health can make the biggest impact on community health, we call these significant health needs.”

There is also a strong focus on early childhood health. Efforts such as screenings at well-child checks, immunizations, and safe sleep education help families protect their infants and prevent possible tragedies. This work also includes preventing abuse and neglect among children in our neighborhoods and communities.

The action plan also includes strengthening local coalitions and advocacy groups to help reach as many as possible.

“In Nevada, the data consistently points to behavioral health as a shared challenge across communities,” said Will Rucker, director of community health in Nevada at Intermountain Health. “We’re working to address this challenge through a more upstream approach by strengthening the conditions that shape well-being before a crisis occurs. That means building trust, increasing access through community-based collaborations, and increasing the capacity of community members, such as educators and other trusted adults, to recognize the signs and connect people to the right support at the right time.”

In southern Nevada communities, the report found that expanding behavioral health resources and strengthening suicide prevention efforts are vital. Action includes improving safety, including increasing access to safe firearm storage through gun locks and family education.

Early childhood health remains a key priority in Nevada. Efforts are centered on prevention, strengthening protective factors, and delivering culturally relevant injury prevention education to help adopt safe practices.

“We have been engaging with several groups and community organizations, such as RTC, Safe Kids of Clark County, and the YMCA, among others, to increase access to safety devices such as bike helmets and life vests,” Rucker said. “We all have similar goals, which are to protect and support our kids and families."

Intermountain Health is working toward the Nevada Children’s Hospital to be built on the UNLV Research and Technology Park. The children’s hospital is slated to be completed by 2030.

The CHNA methodology includes working with community organizations, health departments, and more to find the greatest needs for the surrounding area.

The report and implementation strategies help Intermountain Health listen, focus, and act to community needs.

In a moment that captured the heart and soul of Las Vegas, global music icon Bruno Mars announced a $1 million gift to Intermountain Health Nevada Children’s Hospital during a live event at Toshiba Plaza with thousands of people in attendance, marking a powerful milestone in the hospital’s campaign for kids.

The announcement came on April 10 — officially recognized as “Bruno Mars Day” — a citywide celebration honoring Mars’ deep roots and enduring commitment to Las Vegas. Bruno Mars Day festivities celebrated the start of his sold out The Romantic Tour, which kicked off April 10 at Allegiant Stadium.

 The day also coincided with MGM Resorts International naming a Las Vegas street in his honor, a tribute to the artist whose performances have helped define the city’s modern entertainment legacy.

“Today, I'm going to donate $1 million to the future Intermountain Health Nevada Children's Hospital,” said Mars to the jam-packed crowd.

The $1 million gift will directly support lifesaving care, advanced pediatric programs, and expanded access for children and families across Nevada.

“This gift is pure Bruno — bold, joyful, and deeply rooted in community,” said David Flood, president of Intermountain Foundation and chief development officer at Intermountain Health.  “Bruno Mars doesn’t just perform in Las Vegas; he invests in its future. Because of his generosity, more kids will receive the care they need regardless of complexity, and the health trajectory of the entire region will be enhanced. This serves as a spark – one that we believe will ignite even more momentum and generosity for this historic campaign.”

On stage, Bill and Wendy Hornbuckle, Intermountain Health’s Nevada Campaign for Kids Co-Chairs; Mandy Richards, DNP, RN, chief nursing executive for Intermountain Health and president of Children’s Health; and David Flood, accepted the gift from Bruno along with “Super Benji” and his mother, Azalea Sanchez. 

Mars asked Benji to come out on stage when announcing the gift. The crowd chanted Benji’s name, a Las Vegas resident and Intermountain Health patient who has faced cancer three times, and whose strength has inspired caregivers and families alike as a reminder for whom this gift is dedicated.

“Being with Benji and his mom on stage with Bruno made this about more than a donation,” said Wendy Hornbuckle. “It turned the spotlight on the urgent need for more pediatric care in our community and what’s possible when people come together to support kids and families.” Bill Hornbuckle, chief executive officer and president of MGM Resorts International added. “Today served as a reminder of what’s possible when music, generosity, and community come together for kids, Las Vegas style.”

Intermountain Health will build the stand-alone children’s hospital at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Harry Reid Research and Technology Park, in southwest Las Vegas, which is planned to open in 2030.

Intermountain Health is committed to funding two-thirds of the $1 billion+ project needed to complete the comprehensive vision for Nevada Children’s Health, including the standalone children’s hospital. Intermountain has commissioned Intermountain Foundation to seek the remaining funding through philanthropic support. 

Foundation leadership is working closely with the Hornbuckles in building the leadership framework of the campaign, which will provide an opportunity for individuals and organizations at all levels to become a part of this historic endeavor, and to impact the lives of countless families.

Intermountain Health hosted a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the new Intermountain Health District Clinic in Henderson, Nevada. 

This new medical office building brings together five existing clinics and introduces three new ones.

The state-of-the-art 45,000-square-foot facility brings together senior primary care, oncology, and children’s health under one roof—creating a comprehensive and convenient hub for families across southern Nevada.

The District Clinic will also introduce wound care and palliative care, two new service lines, expanding the reach of Intermountain Health’s offerings in the community.

“What the District Clinic provides is a beautiful, single, modern location designed to strengthen access, improve coordination, and support long-term growth,” said Trevor Smith, Intermountain region vice president of Medical Group Operations. “We know that as our lives become busier than ever and our days fill with activities, it is more vital than ever to make world-class care as convenient as possible.”

With this facility, Intermountain Health is increasing access to high-quality, preventive, and specialty care to help meet the growing healthcare needs of the community—ensuring people can receive the care they deserve close to home.

As part of the affiliation, and as a demonstration of their long-standing commitment to the Las Vegas community, Shriners Children’s will own and operate an independent pediatric orthopedic clinic, located within the newly constructed Intermountain Health Badura Clinic in southwest Las Vegas, scheduled to open this summer, and eventually the Outpatient Services Center on the Intermountain Health Nevada Children’s Hospital campus. Shriners Children’s will also serve as the provider of record for orthopedic services, employing clinical and nonclinical staff supporting its operations.

Intermountain Health has selected experienced healthcare leader, Russ Williams, as the president of Intermountain Health Nevada Children’s Hospital.   

In his new position, Williams will help lead the development and future operations of Nevada’s first standalone children’s hospital.  

Williams brings more than two decades of leadership experience in pediatric and academic healthcare.   

“The Nevada Children’s Hospital represents one of the most important investments we can make in the future of our region. Families across our state deserve access to world-class, comprehensive pediatric care close to home, and this hospital will transform what is possible for generations to come,” said Mitch Cloward, Intermountain’s region president. “Russ brings the proven leadership, vision, and expertise needed to guide this critical work forward.” 

Most recently, Williams served in senior leadership roles at Texas Children’s Hospital in Austin, Texas, where he supported a rapidly growing pediatric platform and strengthened partnerships across clinical, academic, and community teams.   

Williams has also held leadership positions at Seattle Children’s, Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, and the University of Minnesota Medical Center. Across these roles, Williams led system operations, regional programs, patient experience efforts, and major capital philanthropic projects—including the opening of new children’s hospitals.   

“His deep experience in pediatric healthcare and his commitment to community partnership make him the right leader at the right moment. Intermountain Health will build the stand-alone children’s hospital at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Harry Reid Research and Technology Park, in southwest Las Vegas. In 2025, Intermountain announced the architects and contractors for the project and subsequently began design work. 

Intermountain Health is committed to fund two-thirds of the $1 billion+ project needed to complete the comprehensive vision for Nevada Children’s Health, including the standalone children’s hospital. Intermountain has commissioned Intermountain Foundation to seek the remaining funding through philanthropic support.

LAS VEGAS – Intermountain Health anunció hoy que ha finalizado la adquisición de Steinberg Diagnostic Medical Imaging (SDMI), una empresa de diagnóstico por imágenes de radiología para pacientes ambulatorios que cuenta con 12 ubicaciones en todo Las Vegas Valley.   

De esta manera, Intermountain Health incorpora ahora centros de diagnóstico por imágenes a su creciente disponibilidad de servicios de atención médica en el sur de Nevada, lo que constituye una mejora en el acceso a una atención médica más coordinada e integral para los pacientes.

Intermountain Health today announced it has finalized its acquisition of Steinberg Diagnostic Medical Imaging (SDMI), a leading outpatient radiology imaging company with 12 locations across the Las Vegas Valley. 

Intermountain Health’s addition of imaging centers to its growing availability of healthcare services in southern Nevada enhances patients’ access to more coordinated and integrated healthcare.  

“Intermountain Health’s expansion of imaging services through SDMI strengthens our capacity to support Las Vegas patients throughout their care journey,” said Scott Stevens, MD, chief medical officer for Intermountain’s Desert Region. “This comprehensive model of delivering high-quality, cost-effective imaging services in-house allows us to provide continuity of care with a seamless, person-centered approach.”  

SDMI, a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence, is accredited by The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and is an accredited Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. SDMI is also designated as a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology.    

SDMI’s affiliated radiologists are all accredited by the American Board of Radiology and are members of the American College of Radiology. Most are sub-specialized in areas of study in which they performed their fellowship training including neuroradiology, women’s imaging, cardiology, body imaging, PET/CT oncology, musculoskeletal, interventional, and pediatric radiology.

SafeNest, Nevada’s largest and most comprehensive nonprofit dedicated to ending domestic and sexual violence, today held a housewarming media event in Las Vegas for its new trauma triage center. 

SafeNest purchased the two-story building two years ago with funding from Intermountain Health’s Place-Based Investment portfolio. Intermountain secured for SafeNest a loan of nearly $1 million to allow them to purchase the center with very low interest rates and non-profit center tax credits. 

Intermountain Health Region president and community health lead, Mitch Cloward, shared that SafeNest’s focus on addressing the devastating impact of domestic violence aligns with the nonprofit health system’s mission of helping people live the healthiest lives possible. 

“Domestic violence is a key social driver of health, non-medical factors that can significantly impact the health of a family, neighborhood, and community,” Cloward said. “As a forever anchor institution, Intermountain is committed to serving our communities with the long-term health of all individuals as our top priority. We are honored to have been able to create a sustainable resource for our community partner SafeNest and its clients for years to come.” 

The new center has 10 beds for clients who have been screened through SafeNest’s hotline. Domestic violence survivors may stay at the center for 72 hours and work with a case manager. 

The 2,000-square-foot center is designed to resemble a spa-like refuge for decompressing: quiet, tranquil and calm. SafeNest’s staff reviews the clients’ options for living arrangements. If there are no friends or family to safely take the client, SafeNest moves them into its confidential shelter. 

Downstairs, the center also has a kitchen and children’s library. SafeNest staff and advocates have their offices upstairs to provide immediate accessibility. 

“This is where hope begins,” SafeNest CEO Liz Ortenburger said.

En un gran avance para la salud de las mujeres en Nevada, una médica de Intermountain Health realizó la primera ablación por radiofrecuencia Sonata del estado para tratar los fibromas uterinos. Esto evitó que la paciente deba realizarse una cirugía mayor y les brinda nuevas esperanzas a las mujeres de Nevada que padecen esta condición médica común.

“No fue inquietante. Fue un alivio para mí. No podía sentirlo ya que no tenía dolor”, dijo Nesbit, mujer de 39 años de Las Vegas.

Nesbit había estado lidiando con períodos abundantes y debilitantes de forma habitual durante años y creía que así era como funcionaba su cuerpo.

Cuando finalmente se investigaron los períodos abundantes, se descubrió el fibroma. Entonces, la Dra. Kim comenzó a explorar todas las opciones para tratar los fibromas sintomáticos que afectaban de manera negativa su calidad de vida como madre y enfermera.

“La Dra. Kim me habló con mucha sensatez. Me compartió toda la información y me dio materiales para que me lleve a casa e investigue. Fue como hablar con una amiga”, añadió Nesbit.

In a major advancement for women’s health in Nevada, a physician at Intermountain Health has performed the state’s first Sonata radiofrequency ablation to treat uterine fibroids, sparing the patient from major surgery, and providing new hope for Nevada women who have the common condition.

Sunwook “Sonnie” Kim, MD, Intermountain Health obstetrics and gynecology physician, successfully performed the procedure, marking the first time the minimally invasive, incision-free, procedure has been performed in Nevada.

“This is a game-changer for women in Nevada,” said Dr. Kim. “Now, patients no longer need to travel out of state to places to seek advanced fibroid care. We’re bringing world-class, minimally invasive options right here to patients in our community.”

Uterine fibroids, also known as myomas or leiomyomas, are noncancerous growths that develop in the muscle tissue of the uterus. Uterine fibroids are a serious medical condition that are very common, affecting a significant number of women.

While some women experience no symptoms, others suffer from heavy or painful periods, pelvic pain, anemia, and complications such as infertility or pregnancy challenges, including miscarriage potentials.

Common symptoms of fibroids include:

• Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
• Painful periods
• Pelvic pain or pressure
• Frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder
• Constipation
• Pain during intercourse
• Infertility or pregnancy complications

Treatment options have varied, depending on the severity of the fibroids.  Treatment options for symptomatic fibroids include medication, hormonal IUD, myomectomy (removal of only fibroids), uterine artery embolization, and hysterectomy not involving ovaries unless indicated.

Now, the Sonata procedure represents a major step forward in gynecologic care.

Unlike those traditional surgical options, Sonata is performed transvaginally with no external incisions, preserving the uterus and fertility options. Most patients experience minimal or no downtime and can return to normal activities quickly.

Nevada resident, Nefertiti Nesbit, came to Dr. Kim after an ultrasound found a single fibroid that was the size of an orange.

For Nesbit, it was the answer to major issues.

“It was not unsettling. It was a relief for me, I couldn’t feel it as I was not having pain,” said Nesbit, a 39-year-old from Las Vegas.

Nesbit had been dealing with debilitating heavy periods routinely for years and believed that was just how her body worked.

When they investigated the heavy periods finally, that led to the discovery for the fibroid and to Dr. Kim exploring all options to treat her symptomatic fibroids that negatively impacted her quality of life as a mother and a nurse

“Dr. Kim was very down-to-earth speaking to me. She shared all the information and gave me materials to take home and research. It was like talking to a friend,” Nesbit added.

She chose the Sonata option, shrinking fibroids from the inside with gentle heat.

Nesbit said she was in very little pain post-op that diminished rapidly and 24 hours later, she said she was continuing her life.

Those heavy periods disappeared within three cycles. Now, her menstrual cycles are normal and she’s happy they no longer cause havoc on her life.

Intermountain Health’s Women Health clinics in Nevada have been on the cutting edge of advancements of women’s care for many years, with Lamarr Tyler, MD, performing advanced surgical options, including vNotes (vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery), for the state.

Dr. Kim has long been a pioneer in expanding access to advanced minimally invasive gynecologic procedures.

Her previous advancements include introducing robotic surgery in 2011 and vNotes in 2020.

Dr. Kim is recognized as a master robotic surgeon and a VNOTES faculty to teach other surgeons in the United States.

As kids return to school beginning this week in Nevada on Monday, bicycles, scooters, and e-bikes will be increasing around Clark County. This is also at the time that first responders have seen an alarming rise in the number of crashes and fatalities involving these modes of transportations for children and adults. 

The Intermountain West also has the fourth-highest traumatic brain injury hospitalization rate in the country for children. Some of these injuries could be prevented by wearing a helmet. 

Child trauma incidents historically rise in the summer months, and peak in July. 

“I have personally seen the profound impact of the head injuries that can occur in our children here from bikes, e-bikes, scooters, and more,” said Taryn Bragg, MD, pediatric neurosurgeon with Intermountain Health in Las Vegas. “Traumatic brain injuries can be devastating for kids and their families with lifelong aftereffects. Helmets, and proper-fitting ones at that, are vital to our safety for our children, as well as adults.”

Dr. Bragg is the only full-time, board-certified pediatric neurosurgeon in the entire state of Nevada. She sees the effects that head injuries have on families on a near-daily basis.  

 Parents can check the fit of their child’s helmet by making sure of the following:

• The helmet fits snugly and sits level on the child’s head. 
• The helmet fits two finger widths above the child’s eyebrow
• The side strap V-shape fits just under the child’s ears.
• One adult’s finger can fit between the child’s chin and the strap. 

“Helmets are not a one size fits all situation,” said Will Rucker, Nevada Community Health director. “As parents, and as a community, we need to be sure that our vulnerable children are protected as much as possible. Make sure those helmets fit and are being worn properly.” 

Safe Kids of Clark County have been working diligently with communities to get the word out on bike helmet safety.  

“Parents should take the time to ride or walk the route to school with their children, to make sure that they are always following the rules of the road. Also, remember the helmet is the most important piece of equipment that the child must have,” said Jeanne Marsala, MSN, RN, Executive Director Clark County Safe Kids.

Officials in Nevada have been working to help curb the injuries and fatalities over recent years. New e-scooter ordinances that began May 21, 2025, detailing several new restrictions including a speed limit of 15 mph and limits on riding in park areas, and riders under age 18 must wear a helmet.

“Please, slow down in school zones, obey crossing guards, and stay alert for children biking and walking to school,” said Commissioner Michael Naft. “It is a responsibility of drivers to acknowledge and share the road with all road users. By remaining mindful and considerate of all modes of transportation in school zones, we can ensure a great start to the school year.”

Intermountain Health is committed to strengthening collaborations with local organizations, state and local officials, and community advocates working to prevent and decrease injuries for children. This commitment is part of the Intermountain Community Health Needs Assessment.

The bike safety event was held at Amplus Academy and the school participated with several students’ showing proper helmet safety while riding a bike course. Amplus Academy is next to the site where Nevada’s first comprehensive stand-alone children’s hospital will be built to meet growing regional children’s health needs. It will include specialty-based care, such as oncology and cardiovascular services, and others that patients have had to travel out-of-state to receive this care. 

The new children’s hospital, projected to be completed by 2030, is an historic initiative that represents one of the most significant and exciting opportunities to elevate children’s health in Nevada. Philanthropy and community partnerships are critical to make this vision a reality, and campaign planning is underway.

Intermountain Health has selected The PENTA Building Group in partnership with Jacobsen Construction to build the first-ever stand-alone comprehensive children’s hospital in Nevada.

The selection of these construction firms brings a wealth of experience to the historic project, combining PENTA’s familiarity and expertise in leading large-scale projects in Nevada with Jacobsen’s innovative and expansive knowledge in healthcare construction, which includes the second Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital campus that opened in Lehi, Utah, in early 2024.

LAS VEGAS: Intermountain Health, The Gardner Group y la Fundación de Investigación de la Universidad de Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLVRF, por sus siglas en inglés) anunciaron recientemente que firmaron el contrato de arrendamiento del terreno en el Parque de Investigación y Tecnología Harry Reid de la Universidad de Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV, por sus siglas en inglés).  

En octubre, estas tres entidades firmaron los contratos para la construcción de un hospital de niños integral en el terreno. Se celebró una ceremonia de inauguración de un cartel que marcaba esa ubicación con la presencia de los líderes de Intermountain, los líderes de la UNLV, funcionarios locales y estatales, defensores de la comunidad y el gobernador Joe Lombardo. El cartel dice: “Futura ubicación del primer hospital de niños integral independiente en Nevada”.  

Cuando se termine, el hospital de niños de Intermountain Health será el primer hospital independiente en Nevada que se dedique completa y exclusivamente a la salud de los niños. Intermountain Health, The Gardner Group, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Research Foundation (UNLVRF) recently announced completion of a land lease agreement at UNLV’s Harry Reid Research and Technology Park.  

In October, these three entities signed agreements for a comprehensive children’s hospital to be built on the land. A ceremonial unveiling of a sign marking that location was held with Intermountain leaders, UNLV leaders, local and state officials, community advocates and Governor Joe Lombardo. The sign reads: “Future Site of Nevada’s First Stand-alone Children’s Hospital.”  

When completed, the Intermountain Health children’s hospital will be the first stand-alone hospital in existence in Nevada that is fully and comprehensively dedicated to children’s health. This includes specialty-based care, such as oncology and cardiovascular, among other services that patients have had to travel out-of-state to receive.  

The new children’s hospital is a historic initiative that represents one of the most significant  and exciting opportunities to elevate children’s health in Nevada. Philanthropy and community partnerships are critical to make this vision a reality, and campaign planning is underway.

LAS VEGAS – Los profesionales de la salud de Intermountain Health se unieron hoy a los líderes y subcontratistas de Martin-Harris Construction para celebrar la ceremonia de firma y colocación de la última viga en el primer edificio médico de su clase de 90,000 pies cuadrados jamás construido en Nevada. Este brindará servicios para la salud críticos al suroeste del valle de las Vegas.

Además de Martin Harris Construction y HDR, Inc., el equipo del proyecto de construcción de Badura Cinic también incluye TJK Electrical Engineering y VBFA Engineers.

El martes todos tuvieron la oportunidad de firmar la viga de aluminio final antes de ser alzada y colocada en la parte superior del edificio, junto con otra viga ceremonial, indicando así el final de la construcción vertical de la estructura de color coral.

“Hoy se cumple un paso crucial al ver como este proyecto tan importante llega a su fin y que servirá a tanta gente en nuestra comunidad. The YMCA of Southern Nevada hosted the Y’s annual Healthy Kids Day^® on April 26th from 12pm-2pm located at the Durango Hills YMCA. 

The free, annual event features a variety of family-friendly activities to encourage healthy kids, healthy families and a healthy start to the summer season. With water safety top of mind, registration for our Safety Around Water (SAW) program designed with a specific sequence of skills proven to ensure children have a safe and fun aquatics experience will also begin on Healthy Kids Day.

Sponsored nationally by Peanuts, Healthy Kids Day’s mission is to prepare Las Vegas families for a safe, healthy, and fun summer. One of the biggest highlights of the event is early access to the YMCA’s outdoor water park, giving families a head start on summer fun before it officially opens for the season.

Intermountain Health has made children health and safety part of their main health priorities. The critical areas were identified as part of the current Community Health Needs Assessment, which was built from extensive research from local health status, health needs, and assets that allow the nonprofit health system to inform and identify key local area health priorities, including the sustaining health needs of children and families. 

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children in Las Vegas and the surrounding area. The majority of drowning deaths occur in family pools. The most common drowning victim is a child four years of age or younger, occurring between noon and dinner. These tragedies often occur while parents are home and there is a brief lapse in supervision.

“We encourage parents and youth to learn the ABCD’s of drowning prevention: Adult Supervision, Barriers like self-closing gates, Classes, swimming, water safety & CPR and devices like life jackets,” said Will Rucker, community health director for Nevada for Intermountain Health. “There is no substitute for active adult supervision, which is why we recommend an “adult water watcher” be assigned any time children are swimming or around water to prevent drowning.”

Today, Intermountain Health donated 129 life jackets to the YMCA of Southern Nevada to be used for free at the four waterpark YMCA locations. 

Intermountain announced in October, plans to build Nevada’s first comprehensive stand-alone children’s hospital.The facility, set to be located in the UNLV Research and Technology Park, is projected to be completed by 2030, providing specialized pediatric care to meet the growing needs of the region.

LAS VEGAS. Intermountain Health ha dado a conocer su estrategia de implementación de salud comunitaria, en la que se describe un plan integral para mejorar los resultados sanitarios de las poblaciones más vulnerables del sur de Nevada.

La estrategia se basa en los resultados de la primera Evaluación de las Necesidades de Salud Comunitaria (CHNA, por sus siglas en inglés) de Intermountain en el sur de Nevada, que identificó el bienestar mental, los determinantes sociales de la salud, el acceso a la atención médica, las enfermedades crónicas y la mejora del bienestar de los niños y las familias como necesidades de salud importantes.

En el informe de la CHNA, se proporcionaron amplios detalles sobre el estado, las necesidades y los activos de salud locales que permiten que el sistema sanitario sin fines de lucro informe e identifique las principales prioridades de salud del área local. Intermountain creó esa evaluación inicial después de involucrar a organizaciones que representaban una amplia gama de intereses en la comunidad del sur de Nevada. El año pasado, Intermountain Children’s Health colaboró con Nevada Highway Patrol, SafeKids del condado de Clark y los socorristas para concienciar a Nevada sobre los peligros de dejar a los niños en un automóvil a temperaturas elevadas. Los CHW son profesionales de la salud pública capacitados que sirven de puente entre su comunidad y los recursos sanitarios y sociales esenciales. Gracias a su experiencia vivida y a sus profundos vínculos con la comunidad, ayudan a derribar las barreras que impiden la salud y el bienestar de las personas de mayor riesgo.

LAS VEGAS – La construcción del primer hospital infantil independiente de Nevada a cargo de Intermountain Health mejorará la salud y el bienestar infantil, y la economía de Nevada.

Se espera que, con el nuevo hospital, se conserve en Nevada a los niños y sus familias con necesidades de atención médica, y que el estado reciba un impulso económico de $724 millones durante los cinco años de construcción anticipada, y una producción económica anual de $841 millones una vez que el hospital abra, de acuerdo con un estudio de investigación independiente realizado por Applied Analysis.

“Era importante para nosotros desde el inicio completar toda la diligencia debida hacia la meta del primer hospital infantil independiente”, expresó Lawrence Barnard, vicepresidente adjunto de Pediatría de Intermountain Health en Nevada. “Esta labor ha sido multifacética, estratégica, analítica y se requirieron años de trabajo arduo y determinación”.

Intermountain Health contrató a Applied Analysis para que llevara a cabo una investigación independiente antes del anuncio de construcción de un hospital infantil en el sur de Nevada del pasado octubre. Este completo análisis, que se entregó a principios del 2024, incluyó las necesidades de salud de la población pediátrica de Nevada, el impacto económico de construir un edificio, y el tamaño y el alcance de un hospital infantil para satisfacer las necesidades del estado. 

Parte del análisis se incluyó en el informe del Lincy Institute de la de la Universidad de Nevada en Las Vegas (UNLV, por sus siglas en inglés), “Developing a Stand-Alone Hospital in Southern Nevada”, publicado en septiembre del año pasado.  

Estos son algunos de los hallazgos principales:  

Con el nuevo hospital, las familias podrían quedarse en Nevada para recibir atención pediátrica. En 2023, Nevada reportó que 29,802 (veintinueve mil ochocientos dos) niños y jóvenes menores de 21 años recibieron atención afuera del estado. Se pagaron más de $123 millones a profesionales médicos fuera del estado.

“Esto no incluye la inmensa pérdida que las familias deben pagar a nivel económico y el estrés mental para conseguir atención especializada para sus niños en esos estados. A veces, deben estar lejos de casa por días y semanas”, indicó Bernard.

Se proyecta que la construcción genere un impulso económico de $724 millones durante los cinco años que llevará construir el hospital.

Una vez inaugurado, se espera que el hospital genere 1334 puestos de trabajo, incluidos puestos para profesionales de atención médica y otros profesionales clínicos y relacionados.

“Las tareas de reclutamiento y planificación de la fuerza laboral ya se encuentran en marcha en preparación para la inauguración. Estaremos listos”, añadió Bernard.

Se espera que el hospital genere $841 millones en producción económica anual.

Es el momento

Históricamente, un hospital infantil en el estado no ha sido posible por cuestiones económicas. Por ejemplo, los niños representan la mayor parte de la población con el 21.7 por ciento, por encima del promedio nacional. Esta población representa una cantidad desproporcionada de inscritos en Medicaid. Alrededor del 20 por ciento de los adultos están inscritos en Medicaid, mientras que el 52.4 por ciento de los niños de Nevada cuentan con Medicaid y el Programa de Seguro Médico para Niños (CHIP, por sus siglas en inglés).

En Nevada, los reembolsos de Medicaid han sido menores; en el 2021, ocuparon el puesto 47 en el país. Los índices de reembolso de Medicaid en el estado apenas cubrieron un tercio de lo cubierto con las tarifas de las aseguradoras comerciales. Los funcionarios estatales han estado trabajando para aumentar los reembolsos y un reciente impuesto a servicios profesionales ha resultado útil.

“Hemos estado trabajando con los funcionarios estatales para cerrar esta brecha de Medicaid con el promedio nacional para poder conservar a los profesionales, mantener los costos bajos y que las familias se atiendan en el estado en lugar de tener que viajar millas para ello”, dijo Bernard. “Les agradecemos por el esfuerzo y nos complacerá continuar con la labor”. 

Intermountain Health anunció el pasado octubre la construcción de un hospital infantil integral en un terreno que consiguió en el Parque de Investigación y Tecnología Harry Reid de la UNLV. En enero, se anunció que los estudios Shepley Bulfinch y Gensler serán los arquitectos del proyecto. 

 Se espera que el trabajo en los cimientos comience el próximo año, y se proyecta que el hospital abra en 2030. El hospital nuevo tendrá espacio para más de 200 camas.

El Lincy Institute de la UNLV publicó el informe “Developing a Stand-Alone Hospital in Southern Nevada” en septiembre del año pasado, para el que Intermountain contribuyó con información incluida en el estudio de Applied Analysis. En el informe de Lincy, se afirma lo siguiente:

“La financiación y la inversión apropiadas en un modelo de atención médica pediátrica independiente sin fines de lucro son esenciales para garantizar la atención pediátrica coordinada y de alta calidad, y la buena compensación para los profesionales de atención médica. Un modelo organizacional sin fines de lucro con financiación de diversas fuentes (privadas, públicas y filantrópicas) es vital para invertir en la capacitación en residencias, investigación, retención del personal y la atracción de talento nuevo. La inversión en la atención médica para niños y adolescentes ofrece altos retornos a largo plazo mediante la prevención y la detección temprana”. 

Intermountain es un sistema de salud sin fines de lucro enfocado en la atención proactiva en contraste con un sistema de pago por los servicios. Así, el sistema se centra en los esfuerzos preventivos en lugar de las ganancias. 

"Este proyecto es histórico. Es la inversión más significativa en la salud de los niños en Nevada en esta generación. Para que funcione, reconocemos el papel vital que desempeñarán los donantes filantrópicos en la creación de un legado de atención que impactará a los niños ahora y a las generaciones venideras", dijo David Flood, director de desarrollo de Intermountain Health. "Este es realmente un momento en el tiempo para que las personas y las organizaciones tengan un impacto dramático en el bienestar de este gran estado, y más allá".

Intermountain Health cuenta con 34 hospitales, incluidos dos hospitales infantiles Primary Children de Intermountain en Utah. El Hospital Primary Children de Salt Lake City cuenta aproximadamente con 287 camas, incluidas 23 camas de salud conductual, y el nuevo predio Larry H. and Gail Miller Primary Children en Lehi, Utah, cuenta con 66 camas.

Intermountain Health’s construction of the first stand-alone children’s hospital in Nevada stands to boost children’s health and wellbeing – and Nevada’s economy. 

The new hospital is expected to keep children and families in Nevada for health care needs, give the state a $724 million economic boost during five years of anticipated construction, and $841 million in annual economic output once the hospital opens, according to an independent research study conducted by Applied Analysis.  

“It was important for us from the beginning to complete all due diligence towards the goal of the first stand-alone children’s hospital,” said Lawrence Barnard, Intermountain Health AVP of Pediatrics in Nevada. “This work has been multifaceted, strategic, analytical, and required years of hard work and determination.” 

Intermountain Health contracted with Applied Analysis to conduct independent research prior to its October announcement to build a children’s hospital in Southern Nevada. This large analysis, that was returned in early 2024, included the health needs of the pediatric Nevada population, economic impacts from building a facility, and the size and scope of a children’s hospital to fulfill the needs of the state. 

The analysis was included in part in the UNLV Lincy Institute report, “Developing a Stand-Alone Hospital in Southern Nevada” issued last September.  

Here are some key findings:  

The new hospital would help families stay in Nevada for pediatric care. In 2023, Nevada reported 29,802 children and youth under age 21 received care out of state.  The payments to those out-of-state providers were over $123 million.   

“This does not include the immense toll families had to pay financially, and the mental stress, to get their children specialized care in those states – sometimes needing to be away from home for days and weeks,” said Barnard. 

Construction is projected to bring a projected $724 million boost for the five years the hospital is being built.   

Once open, the hospital is expected to create 1,334 jobs including health care providers and other clinical and related professionals.  

“Recruitment efforts and workforce planning are already under way to prepare for when the doors open. We will be ready,” Barnard said.  

The hospital is expected to create $841 million in annual economic output.  

Time Is Now 

A children’s hospital in the state has been historically financially unfeasible. For example, children have a higher share of the population, above the national average, at 21.7 percent of the population. That population represents a disproportionate amount of Medicaid enrollees. Around 20 percent of all adults are Medicaid enrollees, while 52.4 percent of all Nevada children are on Medicaid and CHIP. 

In Nevada, Medicaid reimbursements have been lower; in 2021 they ranked 47^th in the country. The reimbursement rates from Medicaid in the state covered roughly a third of what commercial insurers’ rates covered. State officials have been working to increase reimbursements and a recent provider tax has helped the situation. 

“We have been working with state officials to help bring this Medicaid gap closer to the national average which helps retain providers, keep costs down, and families here in the state versus seeking care miles away,” Barnard said. “We thank them for their efforts and look forward to continue the work.” 

Intermountain Health announced last October that it was building a comprehensive children’s hospital on land it secured in UNLV’s Harry Reid Research and Technology Park. In January the firms Shepley Bulfinch and Gensler were announced as architects for the project. 

 Groundbreaking is expected within the next year, and the hospital is projected to open by 2030. The new hospital will be sized to accommodate more than 200 beds. 

UNLV Lincy Institute released the “Developing a Stand-Alone Hospital in Southern Nevada” report last September, in which Intermountain contributed the information contained in the Applied Analysis study. 

The Lincy report states: “Proper funding and investment in an independent not-for-profit pediatric healthcare model are essential to ensure high quality, coordinated pediatric care and well-compensated healthcare professionals. A nonprofit organizational model with funding from multiple sources — private, public, and philanthropic — is vital for investing in residency training, research, retaining staff, and attracting new talent. Investing in healthcare for children and adolescents offers high long-term returns through prevention and early detection.” 

Intermountain is a not-for-profit health system that focuses on proactive care aimed at reducing overall medical costs. This gives the system the ability to focus on the preventative efforts rather than profits.

Intermountain Health has 34 hospitals, including two locations of Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital in Utah. The Primary Children’s Salt Lake City location has approximately 287 beds, including 23 behavioral health beds, and its new Larry H. and Gail Miller Primary Children’s Campus in Lehi, Utah, has 66 beds.  

Intermountain also recognizes the work required to get to this point. There are many across the greater Las Vegas valley and beyond who have worked diligently for a comprehensive children’s hospital.

Child safety advocates at Intermountain Children’s Health are seeing a rise in the number of parents unknowingly purchasing counterfeit car seats online for their children. Today, advocates from Intermountain Health, the Healthy Living Institute at UMC, and Safe Kids Clark County spoke on this dangerous rise and keeping kids safe in vehicles.

These types of seats are almost always purchased online and are enticing because of the steep discount in price compared to major brands. What often confuses parents is that these seats are found on the websites of major national retailers through third-party sellers.

“It’s hard to tell a car seat is counterfeit from a small picture online, and many parents think they found a great deal from a major retailer,” said Michelle Jamison, community health program manager at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital. “Once they realize there’s a problem and try to return it, the site they got it from has already been taken down.”

For many years, Intermountain Primary Children’s has offered both in-person and virtual car seat checks to help educate parents about proper installation and correct use of car seats.

Jamison says that’s where caregivers started noticing more of these counterfeit seats popping up.

The types of counterfeit car seats caregivers are starting to see more of look legitimate and can cost hundreds of dollars. But many of these are missing key components that keep children safe in a crash, and they worry that using these seats could have deadly consequences.

They say the best way to avoid counterfeit car seats is to buy directly from the manufacturer’s website or go to a store in person to purchase the seat. All these models will be legitimate and meet safety standards.

“Parents may think an in-store purchase is more expensive but what they’re really getting is the peace of mind their child’s car seat is safe,” said Jamison. “While some models are pricey, there are less expensive ones that are still crash tested and safe.”

There are several things required on car seats to meet stringent federal safety standards, and parents should look closely to see if any are missing to know if it’s counterfeit.

All car seats are required to have a manufacturers label which includes the name of the car seat, date of manufacture, branding, model number, and expiration date.

This information is used to help register your car seat, which allows manufacturers to notify you of any recalls. Counterfeit car seats don’t have the number and make it ineligible to register.

“Thank goodness we have only seen this a few times, but we really want to make the public aware that this could happen. If you have any questions, you can bring your car seat to one of our local car seat check up events and have it checked by a certified technician. You can find these events by looking on our website at safekidsclarkcounty.org,“ said Jeanne Marsala, executive director of Safe Kids Clark County.

“We also want to remind parents that 8 out of 10 car seats are also installed improperly, so you should always have your seat checked by a certified Child Passenger Safety technician,” Marsala added. “In the last few months, we have seen a rise in serious car crashes involving children. We are finding that in many of these the child has been graduated to the seatbelt prematurely. In other words, they were at an age, weight and height where they should have still been seated in a booster seat. In addition, some of the seatbelt age children have put the shoulder belt portion behind their back or under their arm. It is extremely important for the children to always wear the seatbelt going across their chest to give them optimum protection.”

Parents and caregivers can also schedule complimentary car seat inspections and installations with the Healthy Living Institute at UMC.

The Healthy Living Institute at UMC houses one of the largest car seat programs in Nevada, assisting up to a hundred families per month with vital passenger safety education among other injury prevention programs.

“In addition to the typical installation mistakes, we are starting to see a greater number of these counterfeit and foreign car seats,” said Amy Runge, clinical manager of the Healthy Living Institute at UMC.

“As home to Southern Nevada’s only designated pediatric trauma center, UMC Children’s Hospital sees an alarming amount of children severely injured each year because they are not restrained properly. We are proud to have a robust car seat program with certified passenger safety technicians to assist families both inside the children’s hospital and through daily appointments at the Healthy Living Institute,” Runge added.

To meet safety standards car seats in the U.S. must also include warning labels written in both English and Spanish. They can be found on the back of the car seat but are also required in the area near where the baby’s head goes at the top of the seat.

Counterfeit car seats are often missing the labels, or they’re written in another language. Sometimes these labels have grammatical errors, and the wording doesn’t make sense.

Experts note a missing chest clip is an immediate sign a car seat isn’t safe. They’re required in the United States but not in every country, which is why counterfeit seats usually don’t have them.

“If you determine that you have a counterfeit car seat, stop using it immediately and contact the retailer to notify them that they sold a counterfeit,” Jamison said. “You may be able to recover the cost of the seat if you used a credit card or purchased through a major retailer.”

Parents can also report it through STOPfakes.gov, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the U.S. Department of Commerce via their contact form.

They should also submit a report through their state’s consumer protection agency.

Intermountain Health was recognized as the top healthcare employer in Nevada in the 2024 Forbes Best Employers. This is the first time Intermountain Health has landed on the Forbes list for Nevada.

Overall, Intermountain was sixth employer rated among all companies in the Silver State.

Intermountain entered the Nevada area with the acquisition of Healthcare Partners in mid-2019. Now, the healthcare system has over 65 clinics in Southern Nevada, stretched from Pahrump to Mesquite.

A new 90,000 square foot healthcare facility, the Badura Clinic, was also recently announced with a groundbreaking in May. This new building that is located southwest Las Vegas will house numerous clinics and services including pediatrics, women’s health, adult primary care, senior primary care, and cancer care that includes radiation and oncology.

“We also have amplified our recruiting efforts for nursing and providers to help increase access to healthcare here in the state,” Stanford said.

The Forbes recognition is a standout award as the recognition is based on employee scores.

“Forbes partnered with market research firm Statista to survey more than 160,000 employees working for companies with at least 500 people within the United States,” Forbes Best Employers methodology website listed about the evaluation process.

The questions ask specifically ask employees if they recommend the companies by a 10-point scale. They also are asked to evaluate the companies that respondent worked at in the past two years.

Select Health today announced the grand opening of its Nevada headquarters with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event also celebrated the opening of the Intermountain Health Maule Clinic exclusively for Select Health members located within the same facility.

The new Select Health headquarters serves as a hub for all members to access care, explore health insurance products and services, ask questions face-to-face, and receive immediate assistance. The building also features a dedicated event space for hosting information sessions during health insurance enrollment periods for both Medicare Advantage and commercial insurance plans.

"This new headquarters represents our ongoing commitment to serving the health needs of Nevadans,” said Rob Hitchcock, Select Health president and CEO. “By offering a central location for our members to access services and information, we're making it easier for them to navigate their healthcare journey."

LAS VEGAS – Intermountain Health broke ground today on its first-ever new construction project in Nevada, a 90,000-square-foot medical office building located in the southwest valley of Las Vegas.

The new facility will bring primary care and several specialty care services to one location and feature a linear accelerator, infusion center, and healing garden for patients.

“Intermountain Health is elevating the quality of healthcare delivered in southern Nevada,” said Mitchell Cloward, president of Intermountain Health’s Desert Region, which covers southwest Utah and southern Nevada. “Our caregivers serve our patients and communities with compassion, respect, and kindness as they carry out our mission of helping patients live the healthiest lives possible. This begins with access to affordable, preventative care that aims to simplify our patients’ interactions with healthcare while making it more convenient.”   

Services that will be offered at the new facility will include pediatrics, women’s health, radiation and oncology, adult primary care, and senior primary care.

It will be located at the intersection of West Badura Avenue and South Agilysys Way in the fast-growing southwest area in Clark County.

Nevada-based firm Martin-Harris Construction is developing the building for Intermountain Health.

“Martin-Harris Construction’s unwavering commitment to excellence includes serving as a trusted partner in medical facility construction, which involves unique requirements that impact patients and clinicians as well as the communities they serve,” said Guy Martin, president of Martin-Harris Construction. “We are honored to partner with Intermountain Health as they invest in bringing high-quality healthcare to Nevadans in this state-of-the-art facility. The three-story building is expected to be completed in Spring 2025, with patient care potentially beginning June 2025.

In addition to Martin-Harris Construction and HDR, Inc., the Badura Clinic project team also includes TJK Electrical Engineering, and VBFA Engineers.

“The development of this medical office building reimagined how healthcare delivery can be achieved,” said Todd Tierney, region director of architecture & senior vice president with architects HDR, Inc. “For the design of this project, we drew inspiration from the incredible Red Rock Canyon, capturing its dramatic colors and patterns in our tilt-up construction.”

“This unique approach allowed us to create concrete panels that mimic the canyon's rugged surfaces, adding striking visual appeal while fostering a serene atmosphere for patients,” Tierney added. “The design seamlessly blends form and function, incorporating natural elements to enhance both the building's aesthetic and its environmental sustainability.”

Intermountain Health offers patient care at over 65 clinics across southern Nevada, including 30 award-winning senior primary care clinics that have been recognized for providing exceptional healthcare for adults 65 and older.

With its extended provider network, Intermountain Health delivers patient-centered primary, specialty, and urgent care services to approximately 350,000 southern Nevadans in Clark and Nye counties.

Vegas Inc announced Intermountain Health Desert Region Chief Nursing Officer Keyona Cole and Care Management Manager in Ambulatory Care LaTeisha Morgan as 2024 Health Care Headliners. Cole received the recognition in the Nursing category and Morgan in the Community Outreach category.

Vegas Inc published the 2024 Health Care Headliners in the Healthcare Quarterly special section released today. Health Care Headliner categories also included Dentistry, Education, Emergency Services, Innovation, Physician, Research/Science, and Lifetime Achievement. In addition to supporting clinical operations, she serves as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee leaders and has initiated and overseen innovative solutions to Nevada’s medical assistant shortage. She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Association and currently serves on the Goodwill of Southern Nevada Board of Directors. Earlier this month, Cole received national recognition from Becker’s Hospital Review when she was named to the 231+ Black healthcare leaders to know - 2024 list.

Morgan, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, has been significantly involved in advocacy work in the Las Vegas area for nearly two decades. Her diverse career includes roles such as a family service specialist, case manager supervisor, and director of operations within prominent social work organizations in Las Vegas. Morgan’s commitment to the elderly community is evident through her work with the State of Nevada Elder Protective Services. Additionally, her role as a specialty court specialist with Clark County 8th Judicial District showcased her dedication to justice and rehabilitation. Morgan also is committed to providing awareness to suicide prevention to the community through supporting the HOPE Squad, a high school peer lead suicide prevention group which aims to spread suicide awareness and connectivity.

“These roles give me the opportunity to fulfill my purpose and support my community on a macro and micro level,” said Morgan. “I am honored to assist individuals as they work through challenging times, help our community heal and thrive, and foster the growth of the next generation of mental health clinicians and social workers through my work as a clinical supervisor.”

During this year’s biggest football week in Las Vegas, several current and former NFL players gathered in a room to talk about an aspect that most have never heard from them – their feelings. The players, known for hard hits and spectacular plays, talked about the importance of addressing mental health to a room full of high school students, and it was captured on camera for all to see and learn.

Throughout May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month, Intermountain will be sharing content from the mental health panel, while continuing to engage in important and meaningful mental health conversations with our communities. These events and partnerships highlight a shared commitment to tackling the stigma of mental illness and help others know that they are never alone.

Rob Allen, Intermountain’s president and CEO, spoke at “The Strongest Play is Asking for Help” event, and highlighted the urgent nature of the mental health crisis, labeling it as an epidemic. His remarks underscored concerning statistics, such as the prevalence of mental health disorders among youth ages 6 to 17 and the disturbing fact that suicide ranks as the second leading cause of death for individuals ages 10 to 14.

The current and former NFL players shared messages that reinforced themes of honesty and empowerment to a diverse audience that included city and community leaders and students from the Clark County School District. Each shared personal anecdotes, illustrating their struggles with mental health and the journey toward openness.

The players on the panel and/or who talked to the students included: Solomon Thomas, co-founder of The Defensive Line, New York Jets; Brandon Bolden, formerly of the Las Vegas Raiders/New England Patriots; Darren Waller, New York Giants; Carl Nassib, retired NFL player; Alec Ingold, Miami Dolphins; Cedric Tillman, Cleveland Browns; and Marcus Smith, retired NFL player.

These football athletes that participated are known for their work off the field advocating for community health causes important to them, such as suicide prevention, homelessness, equity, and other issues that need addressing for marginalized neighborhoods and people.

“I am really grateful for the community collaborators, partners, and influential athletes who would give of their time and resources and their abilities to raise awareness of mental well-being and suicide prevention,” said Rob Allen.

The Defensive Line has been working nationwide on suicide prevention messaging, especially calling out the increased risk for Black youth. Among those youth, the risk for Black females has risen by 182 percent between 2001-2017.

Black men also have elevated risks with 80 percent of suicides among that population being male, and the highest number of them are in their early 20’s.

“We have been defined as men, that we have to be tough, and that we define strength in the entirely wrong way,” said Solomon Thomas on the panel. “But through my journey of grief, my own mental health journey, and everything I have been in, I have learned that being tough is not strength. Strength is being vulnerable.”

Being vulnerable with yourself and knowing it’s normal to seek mental health help was an overall message. Darren Waller, who has battled substance use and alcohol disorders, turned his life and his mental state around and talked about that importance.

“For me it was getting honest and (saying), I don’t have all of this figured out,” Waller said. “We have physical skills and we have mental skills, but as far as emotionally, we don’t necessarily have that, and we need to teach younger generations that skill.”

Intermountain Health is a nonprofit health system and conducts Community Health Needs Assessments in all the states it covers. These states are Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Utah. In every Community Health Needs Assessment provided, mental health and suicide are near the top as the biggest areas that need addressing.

Intermountain has worked for years to address this with increasing mental health access, both in-person and virtually, partnering with advocacy groups, and working with safe gun storage messaging and devices. Intermountain has distributed approximately 67,000 free gun locks since 2019 and trained over 57,000 people, including first responders, caregivers, teachers and librarians on Counseling for Lethal Arms (CALM).

After the mental health panel, a service project followed that saw the creation of 1,000 Find Your Anchor Boxes. These blue boxes were packed with various materials designed to inspire, soothe, and offer support - such as a 52+ Reasons to Live deck of cards, an infographic on depression, list of resources, a letter from a stranger who cares, posters, a bracelet, a mixtape, stickers, some other sweet nothings, and a whole lot of good vibes.

The players, Intermountain, and mental health advocates then donated the boxes to Las Vegas-area groups so they would be able to hand-out to youth in need. Those places included UNLV Practice center, The Center, Clark County, and Shine A Light Foundation.

Nikki Timms, Intermountain Health nurse practitioner, has been named the 2023 Honored Hero by the Las Vegas Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Since being diagnosed with blood cancer herself, Timms has made it her mission not only to fight for her health but for others in need of support. She doesn’t want to be seen as a patient, but as a spokesperson for resiliency.

On November 4, Timms will attend the Las Vegas LLS Light the Night, an annual walk that both recognizes those impacted by blood cancer and helps raises money for cancer research, advocacy, and patient support.

In October 2020, Timms, who works in inpatient cardiology, was starting to feel more fatigued than normal.  As a healthy young woman, she attributed this to her workload and raising three children, including a newborn. “I thought eventually I would start getting better, and it never did,” Timms said. “I started to have symptoms, like throat swelling. I couldn’t swallow as well. That’s when I knew something was not right.”

Tests revealed a mass on her pelvis and additional biopsies led to her being diagnosed with stage four follicular lymphoma, a chronic, incurable form of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL).

Through coordination with her clinic team and Intermountain specialists, Timms began chemotherapy and immunotherapy in February 2021, balancing her treatments with working full-time as much as possible. She cited her Intermountain leadership and colleagues for supporting her.

It was important to stay active, keep her mind sharp, and set a positive example for her children. “I wanted to keep my kids’ lives as normal as possible,” Timms said. “It also helps focusing on other people and helping them. If I sit at home all day long, what is that going to do to me mentally? I need to fight.” It was this mindset that drove her to tell her oldest son about her condition. “I want him to know life will throw you curveballs. What you do with them is on you,” she said. “You can still make choices that can make you have a good life. I want my kids to see that you get dealt a hand, do something with it.”

This lesson was reinforced by Timms’ father, who was diagnosed a year before her with lung cancer. As they went through chemotherapy together, he related his experience with Nikki to motivate her to stay strong.

Timms said, “It helped because I had somebody who would enlighten me.  He said, ‘You have you have two choices: Either you fight, or you let yourself succumb to it.’ You have to make a decision, and some people can’t handle that much of a blanket statement. But having him do that and be there has given me more strength to focus.”

Timms has been focusing on outreach efforts with the LLS after they named her their Honored Hero. She said this level of comfort in talking about her cancer is why she joined the organization, to share what she’s learned and let them know they are not alone in their fight.

Specifically, she wants to focus on assisting patients not only with physical care but the mental component. “This disease is exhausting,” Timms said. “Mental health needs to be normalized in cancer patients; that’s number one. I feel the hardest part of your journey is your mental health. I can endure anything physically. Mental fights [are] the hardest.”

Another advantage of sharing her story through LLS is bringing more attention to resources for patients, whether it’s medical care, finances, or insurance. Timms encourages other similarly afflicted patients to seek out the resources that best fit their needs, especially for mental health.

After six rounds of therapy, Timms was officially in remission in July 2021.  As of 2023, she continues her maintenance therapy, started her last cycle of immunotherapy, and works full-time. She credited both her personal and work families for helping her on this journey. She also thanked LLS for giving her an opportunity to amplify her voice.

Looking ahead, Nikki wants to keep focusing on her recovery and her family. She also hopes to further her education and career, saying, “I’m going to continue to live.”

Intermountain Health’s Dr. Audrey Sue Cruz is one of seven honorees who will be recognized at the highly anticipated 2023 Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada annual fundraising gala Dessert Before Dinner. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Encore at Wynn Las Vegas.

An internal medicine physician, Dr. Cruz is the first Filipina-American doctor chosen by Mattel as one of their “Barbie Role Models” and has a limited-edition Barbie replicated after her.

“I am truly honored to be one of seven people recognized by the Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada in this way,” said Cruz. “I know how important it is to have positive role models in life and have made it my mission to empower the next generation.”

Each honoree receives a Girl Scout badge, which are traditionally earned by Girl Scouts after exploring an interest and learning a skill toward that interest. Each badge a Girl Scout collects toward that interest makes them subject matter experts, which aims to inspire them to further explore that topic. Dr. Cruz is receiving the badge for STEAM, an abbreviation for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.

“Dessert Before Dinner provides us with an incredible opportunity to recognize individuals who have truly paved the way in our community,” said Kimberly Trueba, CEO of Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada.

Vegas Inc selected Intermountain Health’s Robert “Bob” Vadovic, RN, DNP, APNc, Medical Director for Community-Based Programs, as a 2023 Health Care Headliner for his work in Education. The 17th annual awards features nine headliners who are making a difference in both the healthcare industry and the health of our community.

“It is truly an honor to receive this very meaningful award,” said Vadovic, who also has served Intermountain Health as Medical Director for Advanced Practice Providers and Program Director for the APP Primary Care Fellowship Program. “My passion for learning can only be rivaled by my passion for helping patients enjoy the best quality of life. I believe the patient is in charge, and I am the tool to help them achieve health and wellness.”

The 2023 Vegas Inc Health Care Headliners were announced in the Healthcare Quarterly special section of the magazine released today. Health Care Headliner categories also included Community Exemplary, Nursing, and Lifetime Achievement. As the founder of the Intermountain Health Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program in Primary Care, Vadovic created the first of only two such programs in the entire state of Nevada. This program has graduated 12 fellows over the past three years. Bob conducted weekly didactic lectures that provided Continuing Medical Education credits (CMEs) for the fellows, which are open to any caregiver in the organization. Bob also created a mentorship program to help retain newly hired providers within the organization.

“Bob has been a true trailblazer in the medical education space in Nevada for years,” said Dr. Cara Camiolo, Chief Medical Officer for Intermountain Health’s Desert Region. “His leadership, creative solutions, and community involvement have led to successful programs and opportunities for our caregivers and contributed to the high-quality, accessible care provided to our patients.”

A highly involved community partner with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Nursing, Vadovic works with Intermountain Health each year to provide stethoscopes to all incoming nursing students during their orientation. He also is an Adjunct Professor and Guest Lecturer at the Touro University of Nevada School of Nursing, where he teaches the Master of Science in Nursing program.

As a member of the Intermountain Health Nevada Clinical Education Committee, Vadovic oversees continuing education for providers, the clinical ladder program for all caregivers, and representation at the UNLV School of Medicine Research Day presentations. This Committee also established Intermountain Health’s partnership with NV Careers to develop our innovative 90-Day Medical Assistant Apprentice Program supported by Goodwill of Southern Nevada. The program creates career opportunities for unemployed or underemployed community members with no prior experience to enter the healthcare workforce through a paid apprenticeship, while also alleviating staffing shortages within a healthcare infrastructure supporting a population of over 2.8 million individuals.

Goodwill of Southern Nevada (Goodwill^®) on June 5, 2023 announced that Intermountain Health Region Chief Nursing Officer Keyona Cole has joined its Board of Directors. As a member of the board, Cole will provide oversight and strategic direction to guide the business and mission of Goodwill of Southern Nevada.

“It is an honor to be named to the Goodwill of Southern Nevada Board of Directors, and I am grateful for the chance to further serve our community in this capacity,” said Keyona Cole, chief nursing officer for Intermountain Health’s Desert Region. “I personally am a strong proponent of opportunities where we can work together in strengthening diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts, and I look forward to advancing the board’s work in identifying and addressing the needs of our communities and further contributing to the overall health and well-being of those who call Southern Nevada home.”

Cole’s career at Intermountain Health began in 2013 as manager of affiliate clinical services of HealthCare Partners Nevada. She became chief of staff in 2018, supporting clinical operations, and then chief nursing officer for the Nevada Region and Medical Group in 2020. She began her role as chief nursing officer for the Desert Region, spanning Southern Nevada and Southwest Utah, in 2021. She also leads Intermountain Health’s DEI Committee in Nevada.

Cole worked closely with Goodwill and NV Careers through the development of the 90-Day Medical Assistant (MA) program. This innovative program provides unemployed or underemployed community members with no prior experience the ability to enter the healthcare workforce through a paid apprenticeship. Apprentices rotate through Intermountain Health’s more than 60 Southern Nevada clinics and facilities including primary care, pediatrics and specialty clinics.

“It is my privilege to announce that Keyona Cole has joined our board of directors,” said Rick Neal, president and CEO of Goodwill of Southern Nevada. “As a key partner in the development of our renowned 90-Day MA program, she has already made seminal contributions to our organization. Cole’s healthcare journey began as a registered nurse in Milwaukee. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Alverno College in Milwaukee. She is a board-certified nurse practitioner and a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Association.

Cole joins a broad range of business, community, educational, and civic leaders on the Goodwill of Southern Nevada board.

Chard Bubb, MD, lead physician for Endocrinology for Intermountain Health in Nevada, and Cardiologist Pamela Ivey, MD, are among the 2023 Top Doctors award winners announced in the magazine released today.

Doctors were nominated via peer recommendations of Southern Nevada’s best health care providers.

Dr. Bubb, lead physician for Endocrinology and medical director for Medical Specialties for Intermountain Health in Nevada, has practiced medicine for more than 18 years. He cares for patients at the Intermountain Health Endocrinology Clinic located at 2880 North Tenaya Way #320 in Las Vegas.

As part of this celebration, the ceremonial first pitch of the April 21 UNLV home baseball game at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas between the Hustlin’ Rebels and California Baptist Lancers was thrown by Christina Martinez, an organ donor who not only changed a life, but saved the life of a friend and colleague, Raquita Elmore.

On July 28, 2021, Christina arrived at Intermountain Medical Center with a shirt saying, “It’s a great day to save lives.” That day, she donated one of her kidneys to Raquita, whose kidneys were failing. Her gift made it possible for Raquita to be healthy and have the energy to do the things she loves.

Intermountain Health, the official health partner of UNLV Athletics, at the game encouraged people to register to become an organ donor and urged fans to discuss these plans with their families. Representatives from Nevada Donor Network shared information on how to become an organ donor.

In Nevada, 639 people are on the national waiting list for a life-saving organ.

Intermountain was presented with a beautiful, engraved crystal plaque at the luncheon as well as included in the Mesquite Chamber’s social media posts and featured on the front page of its website. Intermountain also received a hand-signed certificate of recognition from Gov. Joe Lombardo’s office.

Primary Mesquite Chamber of Commerce membership holders are asked to nominate a member in each category including “Health Provider of the Year.” After the nomination process, a voting ballot is sent to the primary contact for the Chamber membership. The primary person on the membership is asked to cast a vote in each of the categories. Intermountain received the most votes in the category of 2022 “Heath Provider of the Year.” Only members of the Mesquite Chamber in good standing are able to participate in this annual awards recognition, and the voting is not open to the general public.

“We opened our clinic doors years ago because we recognized a tremendous need in the Mesquite community for local and holistic primary care,” said Karim Kaissi, Intermountain Health Desert Region COO for Ambulatory Care and Nevada Medical Group President. “This award is a wonderful affirmation of what we already knew about our caregivers in Mesquite. It is a celebration of their passion and continued commitment to this community.”

The Virgin Valley myGeneration Senior Clinic has three providers and has many of the same offerings as other myGeneration clinics including same-day appointments for patients and Quest lab services. Additionally, the clinic hosts Intermountain cardiology and vascular specialists based in St. George – and collaboration that has allowed these specialists to care for patients in Mesquite over the past year.

Other nominees who were up for the Mesquite Chamber’s “Health Provider of the Year” award included Virgin Valley Dental, Desert Sky Medical, Deep Roots Harvest and Mesa View Regional Hospital.

“Our caregivers at these three new clinics will provide care including overall preventative medicine for one of the most high-need populations in our communities: our seniors,” said Dr. Paul Krakovitz, Region President of Intermountain Health. “We’re excited and honored to be able to provide the highest quality of care for our aging population and ensure they have the resources to be well.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Nevada’s 65 and older population is projected to increase more than 260 percent between 2000 and 2030. Intermountain recognizes that there will be a continued, growing need to offer both primary and specialty care.

The three new clinics, all serving the Henderson area, are among over 60 Intermountain Health clinics throughout Southern Nevada, including specialty care and InstaCare locations. Intermountain Health’s myGeneration Clinics offer longer appointment time spent with your doctor and personal attention at every visit. They also have same-day appointments, on-staff specialists and a focus of preventative care.

The new Horizon myGeneration Clinic is located at 771 E. Horizon Drive, Suite 140. This clinic is the largest of the three new clinics, with 6,200 square feet and 12 exam rooms.

“The Horizon clinic is conveniently located for area residents who seek primary care and preventative care options,” said Dr. Elbert Xu. “And, as an Intermountain patient, you have access to additional specialists within the health system should you need them.”

The new Whitney Ranch myGeneration Clinic, at 1520 W. Sunset Road Suite 100, features 4,935 square feet of clinic space and includes 10 exam rooms.

“Intermountain Health is committed to ensuring access to quality care,” said Dr. Jarom Spencer. “This includes not only being able to secure a primary care provider but maintaining regular visits and communication with the clinic team as well.”

The third new clinic, the Sunset myGeneration Clinic, is located at 2891 N. Green Valley Parkway. This clinic is 4,550 square feet with nine exam rooms.

“Having clinics based within our communities where people live and work contributes to improving not only the well-being of individuals but overall community health,” said Dr. Kevin Urmaza. “The more people routinely utilize their primary care provider, the more likely they are able to avoid needing to go to emergency rooms and/or be admitted into the hospital.”

All three locations will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) and will accept Medicare Advantage and original Medicare plans, among others. Grand opening events are currently being planned and may include a ribbon cutting, tours of the new facilities, provider meet-and-greets and more.

Known as the biggest nighttime running race in the world, the festive event took place on the strip and welcomed over 35,000 runners this past weekend, November 16-17. Intermountain Health was race ready with more than 100 medical personnel at multiple locations along the 5k, 10k, half-marathon, and full-marathon courses to take care of those in need of support.

“While the race was fun and exciting for runners, the health and wellness was the utmost priority, and we tended to the needs of roughly 700 participants,” said Warren Volker, chief clinical officer. “Once a medical need arose, we had doctors, nurses, and other clinicians ready to help.”

The clinics, named myGeneration clinics, are staffed by physicians and care teams who have been specifically trained to understand and care for the unique health needs of people 65 and older on Medicare. Twenty of the 23 clinics are in operation now, with three additional myGeneration clinics expected to be introduced in October in time for the Medicare Annual Election Period, which runs from October 15 to December 7.

The number of seniors in Nevada is expected to grow over the next several years to account for nearly one-third of the state’s population by 2030 according to state demographer Jeff Hardcastle. Intermountain Health currently serves more than 90,000 seniors in Southern Nevada.

“We have a long history of serving seniors in our community,” said Mark Price, market president at Intermountain Health. “That history and depth of understanding seniors’ unique needs has allowed us to create the kind of experience we know seniors want from their healthcare provider – one where they are listened to and get the time they need with their doctor; where their care is coordinated among primary care and specialty care, and where there are resources available to help them achieve their health goals. The myGeneration clinics are a simpler, improved model for seniors, providers and our care teams.”

Among the variety of services offered at the myGeneration clinics, the primary services are annual wellness checks, identification and treatment of chronic conditions, diagnostic testing, laboratory services and immunizations. Additionally, patients have access to a health navigator, a member of the health care team, trained to help support and educate them as they navigate the complex health care system. Health navigators may remind patients of screenings and exams, thoroughly explain medical information, and serve as an advocate for patients when communicating with specialists, hospitals and Medicare plan representatives.

“Our local community is in need of compassionate and personalized medical care that meets the needs and priorities of health care for seniors,” said Ama Brobbey, MD, chief medical officer at Intermountain Health. “As our state’s population ages, we continue to look for ways we can bring innovative services that address the health concerns and needs of this specific population.”

While the myGeneration clinics are part of the company’s ongoing commitment to helping seniors live healthier lives, the new clinic model also aids in physician retention, according to Brobbey.

“With this model, our care team has the time they need to answer all of the patient’s questions and help them make a comprehensive plan for their care,” said Brobbey. “We’ve recognized that our providers and care teams are happier because they can focus on knowing the patients and working closely with specific senior health insurance plans.”
