Intermountain Health's Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program (RESEP), also known as the Downwinders Clinic, will host free public meetings across Utah to provide information about the recently reinstated Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) and help individuals determine whether they or a loved one may qualify for compensation.

The educational meetings will explain changes made to the federal program, including newly eligible geographic areas and expanded access for individuals affected by radioactive fallout from Cold War-era nuclear testing and uranium industry activities.

Attendees will have an opportunity to:

• Learn about the reinstated and expanded RECA program.
• Determine whether they may qualify for compensation.
• Receive applications and educational materials.
• Learn about the online application portal.
• Ask questions about eligibility and the claims process.

Individuals who have completed an application may also schedule a one-on-one review appointment to ensure documents are complete before submission.

The term "downwinder" refers to individuals who were exposed to radioactive fallout from atmospheric nuclear testing conducted at the Nevada Test Site. Many affected individuals and families live throughout Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho and New Mexico.

Under the reinstated law, eligible individuals may qualify for compensation through the federal RECA program.

Nine Intermountain Health hospitals were named to Modern Healthcare’s 2026 100 Top Hospitals list, based on an independent national quality analysis conducted by Premier, Inc.

Intermountain Medical Center (Murray, Utah) was ranked as one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals and was the only Utah hospital recognized in that category.

Intermountain St. George Regional, Intermountain McKay-Dee (Ogden, Utah), and Intermountain Utah Valley (Provo, Utah) hospitals were ranked among the nation’s top 100 hospitals in the Large Community Hospital category list. Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital was also ranked in the Medium Community Hospital category.

Intermountain Layton Hospital topped the Small Community Hospital list, being joined by Intermountain American Fork Hospital, Intermountain Alta View Hospital (Sandy, Utah), and Intermountain Riverton Hospital.

In addition, Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital, Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital, and Intermountain Layton Hospital were further honored as Everest Award Winners, a designation for hospitals that show both top performance and strong improvement over time on Premier’s balanced scorecard.

U.S. News & World Report has named 26 Intermountain Health hospitals to its 2026 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care for mom and baby outcomes, education, and patient satisfaction.

The 26 Intermountain hospitals earned a high performing designation in maternity care for uncomplicated pregnancies in areas such as cesarean sections in lower-risk pregnancies, vaginal births after cesarean-section (VBAC) rates, newborn severe complications rates, birthing friendly and education practices, and outcome disparities based on race/ethnicity, among other measures.

U.S. News also recognizes Maternity Care Access Hospitals, which provide maternity services to communities that might otherwise have inadequate access to maternity care, sometimes referred to as "maternity care deserts." The report identified 147 critical access hospitals in total, with nine Intermountain hospitals making the list (noted "*" above).

Intermountain  Health is determined to provide the highest quality care to pregnant and postpartum patients and their babies, by improving outcomes and access to care within its six-state region. For example, Intermountain recently announced an innovative care program for pregnant and postpartum women with hypertension, and published a study identifying hypertension risks during pregnancy.

Intermountain Health has once again earned recognition as one of the nation’s safest health systems for patients, according to  the Leapfrog Group, a national healthcare safety and quality measurement organization that recently  unveiled its 2025 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. 

This national recognition highlights Intermountain Health’s commitment to the safety of its patients and caregivers by prioritizing processes to prevent patient harm and medical errors.  

Of the 20 Intermountain hospitals evaluated by Leapfrog, 14 received an “A” while six Intermountain hospitals earned a “B” rating, underscoring Intermountain’s consistent safety performance across all communities and a commitment to continuous improvement. 

The Leapfrog survey considered anything that could bring possible harm to patients, such as infections, medical errors, accidents, or injuries. The Leapfrog survey also examines processes and tools that hospitals have in place to prevent harm in the first place. 

It then assigns an “A” through “F” grade, based on the hospital’s performance.

The survey methodology has been peer reviewed and published in the Journal of Patient Safety. Intermountain Health caregivers are continually training for all aspects of patient safety in healthcare. 

There are also protocols in place that encourage caregivers to speak up and raise concerns if they see something which could put someone at risk, noted Dr. Camilio.

Dieciséis hospitales de Intermountain Health han recibido premios de liderazgo en calidad 2025 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, de Vizient por demostrar excelencia en la atención clínica y al paciente de alta calidad.

Tres hospitales, Intermountain Health Fillmore Community, Intermountain Park City e Intermountain St. George Regional, obtuvieron el primer puesto a nivel nacional dentro de su categoría.

Vizient, una destacada empresa de mejoras en el desempeño en la atención médica, clasificó a los hospitales de Intermountain como los de mejor desempeño en la atención médica en su Estudio anual de calidad y responsabilidad, en el que se analiza la información de 1220 hospitales de todo el país. En el estudio, se midió la calidad de la atención al paciente en función de seis factores: seguridad del paciente, mortalidad, eficacia, eficiencia, enfoque en el paciente y variación en la atención.

Tres hospitales de Intermountain Health están clasificados entre los 50 mejores hospitales cardíacos del país para 2025, según un nuevo estudio nacional de hospitales cardíacos en Estados Unidos. 

Premier Inc. publicó su estudio anual y clasificaciones de los 50 mejores hospitales cardiovasculares del país para 2025. Intermountain Medical Center en Murray, Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital en Ogden e Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital están entre los 50 hospitales con mejor desempeño en cuanto a calidad de atención, resultados y experiencia del paciente, entre otros criterios. 

Según el estudio, si los hospitales de todo el país tuvieran calificaciones semejantes a los que figuran en la lista de los 50 mejores, podría significar 14,000 (catorce mil) muertes menos, 28,600 (veintiocho mil seiscientos) pacientes menos de derivación y angioplastia que sufren complicaciones y ahorrar más de 1.5 billones de dólares en costos de hospitalización en 2025.

Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden is ranked as the #1 teaching heart hospital in the nation without a cardiovascular residency program for 2025, according to a new national study of heart hospitals in America.

Premier Inc. released its annual list of the nation’s Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals, and Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital is not only ranked #1 for teaching hospitals without a cardiovascular residency program, but one of the Top 50 heart hospitals in America.

The study by Premier, which is a health care improvement company that has been studying and ranking America’s best cardiovascular hospitals since 1998, uses publicly available data to annually assess performance indicators including patient experience, inpatient mortality, and complications, 30-day mortality and readmissions, and average length of stay and cost per case.

If hospitals around the country had similar metrics to those that made the Top 50 list – including those at Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital – it could mean 14,000 fewer deaths, 28,600 fewer bypass and angioplasty patients suffering complications, and save more than $1.5 billion for inpatient costs, according to the study.

Two other Intermountain Health hospitals were also ranked by Premier as Top 50 hospitals, including Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, which ranked third for hospitals with a cardiovascular residency program, and Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital, which ranked fourth among community hospitals.

Eight Intermountain Health Hospitals have received high national rankings as top performing facilities, providing the highest level of care for patients.

Vizient, a leading health care performance improvement company, ranked the Intermountain hospitals as top health care performers in their annual Quality and Accountability Study, which looked at data from 860 hospitals and measured their quality of patient care based on six factors: safety, effectiveness, mortality, efficiency, patient centeredness, and equity.

The top performing Intermountain hospitals are:

• Intermountain Medical Center in Murray
• Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital in Provo
• Intermountain Cedar City Hospital
• Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden
• Intermountain Alta View Hospital in Sandy
• Intermountain Riverton Hospital
• Intermountain Layton Hospital
• Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital

A top performer designation in the Vizient study reflects a hospital’s excellence in delivering high-quality care. Intermountain facilities were ranked high in three of the four categories.

Vizient ranked Intermountain St. George Regional Hospitals as No. 1 in the nation for large medical centers that provide specialized complex care. Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden ranked 12th and Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital in Provo ranked 14th in the same category.

For the category of top performing comprehensive academic medical centers, Intermountain Medical Center in Murray ranked 5th on the national list.

Intermountain Health had four hospitals honored on the list of top performing community hospitals with Intermountain Alta View Hospital in Sandy ranking 2nd and Intermountain Cedar City Hospital ranking 4^th in the national rankings.

Intermountain Riverton Hospital and Intermountain Layton hospital also received high honors.

Intermountain Health se enorgullece de ofrecer eventos gratuitos Ladies Night Out en siete hospitales de Utah a finales de septiembre y durante el mes de octubre, no solo para celebrar la salud de las mujeres, sino también para brindarles información sobre sus necesidades de atención médica a lo largo de las diferentes décadas de sus vidas.

Intermountain Health is proud to offer free Ladies Night Out events at seven hospital locations across Utah in late September through October, to not only help celebrate women’s health, but also to teach women more about their healthcare needs through the various decades of their lives. 

Women are often very good at taking care of their loved ones, families and friends, but that can make it difficult for women to prioritize their own health and well-being. Research shows women make 80 percent of the healthcare decisions for their families. So, the more informed they are, the healthier they and their loved ones can be.

As we empower women with knowledge, resources, and support to make these decisions, it will help improve the public health outcomes for our communities,” said Wall. 

Intermountain Ladies Night Out events offer a fun atmosphere with interactive displays, health screening information and activities for women to hear healthcare experts, or opportunities to create something to take home. There will be healthy food options to sample from hospital chefs, free giveaways, prize drawings and more. 

The LDS Hospital Ladies Night Out event will feature a panel of four women’s health-related providers. Women can also get a flu shot at the event or schedule a mammogram. Women can also create and take home a succulent plant arrangement inside a mini pumpkin. 

Women will leave each event with an increased knowledge of health screenings or services they might need for whatever stage of life they’re in from adolescence to childbirth, to the postpartum period to helping to prevent breast cancer with regular mammograms, and through the ups and downs of menopause and beyond.

Fortune magazine and PINC AI have ranked Intermountain Medical Center in Murray as the number one major teaching hospital in the nation for 2024.

In addition, nine other Intermountain hospitals in Utah were ranked among the nation’s best hospitals on this year’s top 100 hospitals list, according to PINC AI and Fortune.

“When 10 percent of all the hospitals on a prestigious list like Fortune are from Intermountain Health, it shows how the innovative, caring and compassionate work our caregivers do on a daily basis is helping fulfill our vision of being a model health system – a charge given when our system was formed in 1975,” said Rob Allen, president and CEO of Intermountain Health. “I’m proud of our caregivers for the work they do and the impact it has on our communities. Their work is an inspiration to me and to others.”

The Fortune rankings analyzed publicly available data from more than 2,600 hospitals across the nation to determine top performers in clinical outcomes, patient experience, operational efficiency, and financial health.

Heart patients in Northern Utah who are experiencing symptoms of heart failure now have access to a minimally invasive life-saving heart procedure that is not only improving lives of patients but saving them.

Cardiologists at Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden are now performing a procedure where they place a tiny clip in the heart to repair a leaky mitral valve that significantly decreases the risk of heart failure patients from having to return to the hospital for more care or even dying.

The mitral valve is one of four valves in the heart that keep blood flowing in the right direction. Each valve has flaps, called leaflets, that open and close once during each heartbeat. If a valve doesn't open or close properly, blood flow through the heart to the body can be reduced, according to Eric Lindley, MD, cardiologist and medical director of cardiovascular services at Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital.

“This is a terrific treatment option for patients who are experiencing this issue,” said Dr. Lindley. “We’re really proud to be able to offer this treatment for patients living in Northern Utah so they can get the best care close to home.”

In studies previously done at Intermountain Health and other major heart centers across the country, researchers have found that the MitraClip device reduces risk for hospitalization by half and deaths by nearly 40 percent, while significantly improving the quality of life of patients with secondary mitral regurgitation – an after-effect of heart failure – whose prognosis is typically poor without treatment.

The MitraClip is a tiny device that is attached to the mitral valve in the heart that repairs the leaking valve. In patients with this condition, the mitral valve has been deformed by the effects of heart failure, which leads to leaks that make the heart work harder to move blood through the body.

Unlike surgery, the MitraClip procedure does not require opening the chest surgically and temporarily stopping the heart, so it’s considered a minimally invasive procedure, said Dr. Lindley.

Instead, interventional cardiologists access the mitral valve through a catheter – a small tube that is guided through a vein in the groin to the heart.  The MitraClip itself is smaller than a dime, which allows it to be placed via catheter. It’s then maneuvered in place – right above the malfunctioning mitral valve.

With ultrasound guidance, the MitraClip is positioned so it can grab the two leaflets of the valve and pull them together. Once that happens, the sides of the valve can open and close normally. This helps to restore normal blood flow through your heart.

About half of people who develop heart failure die within five years of diagnosis, according to the American Heart Association. For those with secondary mitral regurgitation, blood doesn’t flow properly though their bodies, which can plummet their quality of life. The MitraClip procedure is an effective and minimally invasive solution to the problem.

In severe mitral valve regurgitation, the heart must work harder to pump enough blood to the body.  The extra effort causes the left lower heart chamber to get bigger. Untreated, the heart muscle becomes weak. This can cause heart failure.

About half of people who develop heart failure die within five years of diagnosis, according to the American Heart Association.

For those with secondary mitral regurgitation, blood doesn’t flow properly though their bodies, which can plummet their quality of life. The MitraClip procedure is an effective and minimally invasive solution to the problem.

Two Intermountain Health hospitals have been named Top 50 heart hospitals in the nation for 2024 by Fortune Magazine. 

Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden and Intermountain Medical Center in Murray are ranked as two of the nation’s Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals for 2024 by Fortune and Pinc AI, which evaluates heart hospitals annually to determine facilities that are excelling in providing high quality, affordable heart care. 

The Fortune and Pinc AI rankings including teaching hospitals with and without cardiovascular residency programs, along with community hospitals. 

This year’s rankings examined 940 hospitals in the United States and assessed their performance based on metrics including clinical outcomes (inpatient deaths and complications, as well as readmission and 30-day mortality rates), operational efficiency (average length of cost and stay), and overall patient experience. 

This is the fourth consecutive year that Intermountain Medical Center has been named to the Fortune Top 50 list, and the first year for Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital.

The rankings focus on short-term, acute care, nonfederal hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of cardiology patients. Hospitals must provide all levels of cardiovascular care, including open heart surgery, to be included in the study. 

According to the authors of the study, compared to peer hospitals, those in the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals operated at lower cost and had better outcomes, recording significantly higher inpatient survival rates, fewer patients with complications, lower readmission rates and up to nearly $10,000 less in total costs per patient case. 

These outcomes add up to meaningful differences. 

According to the study’s analysis, if all hospitals operated at the level of this year’s top performers, there could be 7,600 fewer deaths due to heart disease, 6,700 fewer bypass and angioplasty patients who suffer complications, and more than $1 billion in inpatient costs could have been saved for the 2024 study year. 

This analysis is based on Medicare patients included in this study. If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact could have been even greater.

Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital is bringing cancer care close to home for residents of Northern Utah with a new state-of-the-art, comprehensive, and personalized cancer center. 

Intermountain Cancer Center — McKay-Dee Hospital is located on the first floor of Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden for easy access for cancer patients. 

It has increased its infusion bays for patient comfort from eight to 12 and chemotherapy infusion bays from 16 to 24 and brings several teams together for more collaborative patient care. Additionally, a new linear accelerator has been added and a compounding pharmacy is now adjacent to the infusion bays for easier access and faster treatment. 

This is the largest renovation project Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital has undergone since its opening in 2002. 

“The cancer center is designed to empower its patients and bring a feeling of home and hope no matter their treatment setting,” said Judy Williamson, president of Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital. “We hope it will be a home where friends can strengthen and support one another during their cancer journey and bring people together in a fight to overcome cancer.” 

With a focus on personalized care at the cancer center, a team of oncologists, surgeons, and support staff all collaborate closely together to develop individualized and unique treatment plans for cancer patients with the goal of providing the best cancer care possible. 

A group of Intermountain Health cancer caregivers, clinical leaders, and patients helped officially open the cancer center today with a ceremonial bell ringing. 

The bell ringing signifies a triumphant celebration of patient accomplishment; sometimes it's persevering through uncertainty, conquering fear, enduring hardship, adversity and hanging on to hope. 

“As part of Intermountain Health’s comprehensive network of cancer services, this new cancer center will help a lot of people here in Ogden and Northern Utah,” said Eric D. Johnson, MD, medical oncologist for Intermountain Health. “This facility stands as a testament to our commitment to providing convenient cancer care close to home.” 

Colon cancer patient Gaylene Greener, 65, from Corrine, says the new center and enhanced services took her breath away. 

“When you come every week you want it to feel homey and look beautiful, not so chemical,” said Greener. “The new space has artwork, comfortable chairs, social spaces, and spaces for privacy, as well as the doctors nearby.” 

Greener says it’s a healing place where she feels loved and cared for and not a burden, she calls it a home away from home. 

For cancer patient, Jennifer N., 43, of Lander, Wyo., she says when the construction walls came down on the one-year anniversary of her breast cancer diagnosis, she stood there for a long time just taking in the beauty and art. 

“These are hallowed halls,” said Jennifer. “I may live 300 miles away, but this is where I want to be treated.” 

Meticulous design considerations were made by TSA Architects to ensure that the building itself contributed to the healing process. 

From quiet flooring and treatment areas that offer views of nature to private patient entrances, every detail was crafted to create a soothing and supportive atmosphere for those going through the most difficult times of their lives. 

The new cancer center was made possible by generous donations, including over $4 million in gifts and donations to the Intermountain Foundation to help fund the new center. 

The cancer center’s treatments and services include: cancer immunotherapy, cancer surgery, chemotherapy, biotherapy, radiation therapy, genetic counseling, genomic tumor sequencing, oncology social work, palliative and symptom management, nutrition services, speech therapy, fitness training, and functional physical training.

New state-of-the-art, comprehensive, and personalized cancer center comes to McKay-Dee Hospital.

El Hospital McKay-Dee de Intermountain permitirá que los residentes del norte de Utah puedan recibir atención contra el cáncer más cerca de su hogar gracias a un nuevo y moderno centro integral y personalizado contra el cáncer.

El Centro contra el cáncer del Hospital McKay-Dee de Intermountain se ubica en el primer piso del Hospital McKay-Dee de Intermountain en Ogden para que los pacientes con cáncer puedan acceder fácilmente. 

Ha aumentado sus salas de infusión de ocho a doce y sus salas de quimioterapia de 16 a 24 para que los pacientes tengan una mayor comodidad. Además, permite el encuentro de distintos equipos para lograr una atención del paciente más colaborativa. También se ha agregado un nuevo acelerador lineal y una farmacia de fórmulas magistrales adyacente a las salas de infusión, de forma que se pueda obtener un acceso más fácil y un tratamiento más rápido.

Se trata del proyecto de renovación más importante en el Hospital McKay-Dee de Intermountain desde su apertura en el año 2002.

La paciente con cáncer de colon Gaylene Greener, 65, de Corrine, comentó que el nuevo centro y las nuevas mejoras en los servicios la tomaron realmente por sorpresa. 

"Cuando vienes cada semana quieres experimentar un sentimiento hogareño y lucir atractiva, no quieres pensar en toda la parte química"
dijo Greener. "El nuevo espacio cuenta con obras de artes, sillas más cómodas, espacios sociales y espacios privados, además de los médicos en las proximidades".

Greener comentó que se trata de un lugar de sanación en el que se siente querida y cuidada, y no como una carga. Lo describe como una casa lejos de casa.

La paciente con cáncer, Jennifer N., 43, de Lander, Wyo., comentó que cuando finalmente se tiraron abajo las paredes de la construcción en el aniversario de un año de su diagnóstico de cáncer de mama, permaneció mucho tiempo contemplando la belleza y el arte del lugar.

"Estas salas se sienten realmente como una bendición", dijo Jennifer. "Puede que viva a 300 millas de distancia, pero es aquí donde quiero recibir mi tratamiento".

Los arquitectos TSA tomaron decisiones de diseño muy meticulosas, de forma que el propio edificio pudiese ayudar también en el proceso de sanación. 

Desde suelos sobrios a áreas de tratamiento con vistas a la naturaleza o entradas privadas para los pacientes, cada detalle se consideró en detenimiento para crear un entorno reconfortante y de apoyo para aquellas personas que están atravesando el momento más difícil de su vida.

El nuevo centro para el cáncer fue posible gracias a generosas donaciones, incluyendo casi $4 millones en regalos y donaciones a la Fundación de Intermountain para ayudar a juntar fondos para el nuevo centro. 

Los tratamientos y servicios del centro para el cáncer incluyen: inmunoterapia para el cáncer, cirugía para el cáncer, quimioterapia, bioterapia, radioterapia, orientación genética, secuenciación del genoma del cáncer, trabajo social oncológico, gestión paliativa y de los síntomas, servicios de nutrición, terapia del habla, programa de entrenamiento físico y entrenamiento funcional físico.
