Nine Intermountain Health hospitals were named to Modern Healthcare’s 2026 100 Top Hospitals list, based on an independent national quality analysis conducted by Premier, Inc.

Intermountain Medical Center (Murray, Utah) was ranked as one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals and was the only Utah hospital recognized in that category.

Intermountain St. George Regional, Intermountain McKay-Dee (Ogden, Utah), and Intermountain Utah Valley (Provo, Utah) hospitals were ranked among the nation’s top 100 hospitals in the Large Community Hospital category list. Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital was also ranked in the Medium Community Hospital category.

Intermountain Layton Hospital topped the Small Community Hospital list, being joined by Intermountain American Fork Hospital, Intermountain Alta View Hospital (Sandy, Utah), and Intermountain Riverton Hospital.

In addition, Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital, Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital, and Intermountain Layton Hospital were further honored as Everest Award Winners, a designation for hospitals that show both top performance and strong improvement over time on Premier’s balanced scorecard.

The results are supported by detailed insights and national benchmarks hospitals can use to improve care, strengthen financial sustainability, and improve outcomes. Measures include inpatient mortality and complication indexes, average length of stay, operational efficiency, and patient outcomes.

U.S. News & World Report has named 26 Intermountain Health hospitals to its 2026 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care for mom and baby outcomes, education, and patient satisfaction.

The 26 Intermountain hospitals earned a high performing designation in maternity care for uncomplicated pregnancies in areas such as cesarean sections in lower-risk pregnancies, vaginal births after cesarean-section (VBAC) rates, newborn severe complications rates, birthing friendly and education practices, and outcome disparities based on race/ethnicity, among other measures.

U.S. News also recognizes Maternity Care Access Hospitals, which provide maternity services to communities that might otherwise have inadequate access to maternity care, sometimes referred to as "maternity care deserts." The report identified 147 critical access hospitals in total, with nine Intermountain hospitals making the list (noted "*" above).

Intermountain  Health is determined to provide the highest quality care to pregnant and postpartum patients and their babies, by improving outcomes and access to care within its six-state region. For example, Intermountain recently announced an innovative care program for pregnant and postpartum women with hypertension, and published a study identifying hypertension risks during pregnancy.

Intermountain Health has once again earned recognition as one of the nation’s safest health systems for patients, according to  the Leapfrog Group, a national healthcare safety and quality measurement organization that recently  unveiled its 2025 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. 

This national recognition highlights Intermountain Health’s commitment to the safety of its patients and caregivers by prioritizing processes to prevent patient harm and medical errors.  

Of the 20 Intermountain hospitals evaluated by Leapfrog, 14 received an “A” while six Intermountain hospitals earned a “B” rating, underscoring Intermountain’s consistent safety performance across all communities and a commitment to continuous improvement. 

The Leapfrog survey considered anything that could bring possible harm to patients, such as infections, medical errors, accidents, or injuries. The Leapfrog survey also examines processes and tools that hospitals have in place to prevent harm in the first place. 

It then assigns an “A” through “F” grade, based on the hospital’s performance.

The survey methodology has been peer reviewed and published in the Journal of Patient Safety. Intermountain Health caregivers are continually training for all aspects of patient safety in healthcare. 

There are also protocols in place that encourage caregivers to speak up and raise concerns if they see something which could put someone at risk, noted Dr. Camilio.

El Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital ha incorporado a su primera especialista certificada en atención emocional pediátrica para ayudar a los pacientes más jóvenes a entender mejor sus diagnósticos y tratamientos, lo que ya está produciendo una disminución en los medicamentos que se necesitan para reducir el estrés de estos pacientes.

Kobi Egbert, de 9 años, fue una de las pacientes que recibió la ayuda de Clegg.

Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital has added its first certified child life specialist to help young patients better understand their diagnoses and treatments – and already is seeing a decrease in medication needed to reduce stress. 

Intermountain Health certified child life specialist Leticia Clegg is helping children receiving emergency and surgical care, outpatient procedures such as blood draws, and supporting and encouraging inpatient children with their treatment plans, including finding fun ways to help them take medications, walk, and eat. 

“The community can rest easy knowing that when their children come to Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital, they will be cared for as if they were one of our own,” said Brandon McBride, president of Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital. “Child life specialists address the psychological and social aspects of caring for sick or injured children. An investment in child life is an investment in the health of children in our community.” 

Child life services at Intermountain Health are supported entirely by philanthropy and community donations and are free to patients. Donations fund specialist salaries and supplies, which include Barbie dolls, medical play items, crayons, bubbles, blankets, and stuffed animals. 

But child life is much more than child’s play. 

Child life specialists are psychosocial healthcare professionals with focused training in child development, assessment and coping strategies, family systems, and evidence-based supportive interventions. 

They help children from infancy through adolescence to decrease stress and increase coping through play, education, and normalization of the medical environment. 

“When a child needs surgery, it can be super scary – and a lot of children don’t know what to expect and can tend to think the worst,” said Leticia Clegg, certified child life specialist at Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital. 

“Child life uses play and age-appropriate education to help children understand what’s going to happen to them to help them be less afraid,” Clegg added. “It truly makes a difference in the child’s ability to bounce back from their experience now and later in life.” 

In the first month of child life services, Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital experienced about a 90 percent reduction in the number of children needing sedatives in the same-day surgery unit, said Marcie Sherner, RN, nurse manager of same day surgery and the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) at the hospital. The outcome is similar to findings published by the American Academy of Pediatrics. 

One patient helped by Clegg’s expertise is 9-year-old Kobi Egbert. 

Kobi needed a procedure in same-day surgery. But the thought of surgery made her very anxious, said her mom, Jesica Egbert. 

“My husband and I were so worried about Kobi and how she’d take this, and we were worried about leaving her alone,” Egbert said. “And in walks Letitia, and she was wonderful from the beginning.” 

Clegg brought Kobi toys she liked, and showed her pictures, and used real medical supplies to help her understand what the surgery would be like. 

“She quickly befriended Kobi and made her feel so good and safe, which is not always easy,” Egbert said. “When it was time to go to surgery, Kobi was sad but was okay because she had Leticia to go with her. She was everything Kobi needed to get through that day. She just took all the worry away.” 

During surgery, Clegg came to the waiting room to talk to Kobi’s parents. 

“She told us she held Kobi’s hand until she fell asleep, and gave us a rundown how she was doing,” Egbert said. “She made us feel better too.” 

Clegg is one of 70 child life specialists helping care for children at 11 Intermountain hospitals and care sites, including all Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital locations, Utah Valley Hospital, McKay-Dee Hospital, Riverton Hospital, St. George Regional Hospital, American Fork Hospital, Park City Hospital, Heber Valley Hospital, Layton Hospital, and now, Logan Regional Hospital. Child life also provides virtual consults at Intermountain Medical Center.

Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center has received a national four-year reaccreditation with distinction from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, ensuring the center meets the highest standards of care and patient safety.

The center received reaccreditation after the society completed a rigorous evaluation and survey of the center’s caregivers, training protocols, and equipment to ensure the high quality of care is being provided to patients.

“Investing the time and effort to achieve accreditation, as well as getting recognized with distinction, validates that our clinic is providing the highest quality of care in the safest manner possible to our patients,” said Devin Beckstrand, MD, medical director of the hyperbaric and wound clinic at Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital. “This milestone reflects our clinic’s commitment to excellence and safety.”

UHMS Accreditation with distinction is considered the “gold standard” of excellence for hyperbaric clinics and is only awarded to 20 percent of the nearly 1,400 hyperbaric facilities in the United States.

Participation in the UHMS accreditation is voluntary but requires months of preparation for the more than 600 detailed queries covering patient care, safety, facility standards, equipment maintenance, and team-member training that are rigorously evaluated.

“Preparation for this accreditation actually began three years ago after our last accreditation survey,” said Dr. Beckstrand. “Like other high-quality wound care and hyperbaric medicine programs, we strive to constantly learn and incorporate new hyperbaric medicine techniques and principles every day.”

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves the use of nearly 100 percent oxygen administered in a pressurized chamber at levels greater than sea level pressure, typically twice the atmospheric pressure.

This pressure helps oxygen dissolve more rapidly into the blood advancing its absorption into damaged tissues to promote healing of certain wounds, damaged tissue and bone from radiation therapy, carbon monoxide poisoning, and other illnesses. 

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is often used as part of a multi-disciplinary approach to care, so Intermountain Health’s hyperbaric medicine specialists work with a patient’s entire care team.

Craig Yeager, 63, Hyrum, Utah, knows first-hand the importance of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Earlier this year, Yeager says he was in danger of losing his foot and losing his life.

Yeager had a severe heart condition and needed an aortic valve replacement. However, his doctors told him they couldn’t do the procedure until he took care of his diabetic foot ulcers.

After two months and more than 60 treatments at the Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, Yeager underwent a successful transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), which is a minimally invasive cardiac procedure to treat aortic stenosis.

“It worked!” said Yeager. 

Yeager’s energy has returned and he’s now back on a bicycle and looking forward to a tandem bike tour with his wife this September.

Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital invited the community to join in the celebration of the completion of the hospital’s new 110,000-square-foot, four-story patient tower, which will enhance care for the community.

The new tower, located on the northeast corner of the Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital campus, will house medical, surgical and pediatric nursing units, a transitional care unit, a behavioral health unit, intensive care unit, imaging services, a cardiology unit, an education center, and a new kitchen and cafe.

“The new patient tower represents our unwavering commitment to serving and supporting our ever-growing Cache Valley community,” said Brandon McBride, president and CEO of Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital. “This expansion ensures that we continue to meet the growing healthcare needs of our residents now and in the future.”

After a ribbon cutting ceremony, hundreds of community members toured the new patient tower on Thursday, August 8, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm.

The community celebration included hospital tours, a teddy bear clinic, a resource fair, family-friendly activities, giveaways, and food trucks.

“The community celebration is our way of showing the Cache Valley that Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital is truly their partner when it comes to their health care,” said Jenn Avery, RN, chief nursing officer for Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital. “We want them to see for themselves the new, state-of-the-art, modernized space where they can come and know they are going to receive safe, high-quality care.”

The new patient rooms are designed to enhance patient mobility and safety with improved patient monitoring.

“The patient rooms are larger and more accommodating, providing a comfortable space for patients and their families,” said McBride. “We’re also excited that we have increased our behavioral health unit capacity by about 40 percent, allowing more patients and their families to stay close to home for treatment.”

The new cafe will offer a variety of healthy and delicious dining options with a larger dining space, ensuring a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere for patients, visitors, and caregivers.

“The new tower is just the beginning of the total redesign of the hospital,” said McBride. “The next step in the project is to demolish the existing towers, which were built in the late 1970s, and build a really beautiful main entrance that will make access and navigating the campus easier for our patients.”

Patients and services will move to the new tower in early September.

Fortune magazine and PINC AI have ranked Intermountain Medical Center in Murray as the number one major teaching hospital in the nation for 2024.

In addition, nine other Intermountain hospitals in Utah were ranked among the nation’s best hospitals on this year’s top 100 hospitals list, according to PINC AI and Fortune.

“When 10 percent of all the hospitals on a prestigious list like Fortune are from Intermountain Health, it shows how the innovative, caring and compassionate work our caregivers do on a daily basis is helping fulfill our vision of being a model health system – a charge given when our system was formed in 1975,” said Rob Allen, president and CEO of Intermountain Health. “I’m proud of our caregivers for the work they do and the impact it has on our communities. Their work is an inspiration to me and to others.”

The Fortune rankings analyzed publicly available data from more than 2,600 hospitals across the nation to determine top performers in clinical outcomes, patient experience, operational efficiency, and financial health.

“Our caregivers are at the forefront of innovation in healthcare and Intermountain Medical Center being ranked the top teaching hospital in the country shows that our vision is working,” said Ralph Jean-Mary, CEO of Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

The annual Fortune and PINC AI Top 100 list is broken down into multiple categories with 40 being for teaching hospitals, and the remaining 60 slots for community hospitals.

Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital was listed forth for teaching hospitals while Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital placed second in the category for Large Community Hospitals.

Nine Intermountain Health hospitals have been named to Newsweek’s 2024 rankings of the World's Best Hospitals. 

The prestigious list aims to highlight the best facilities each year by using a mix of methodology that evaluates quality and safety measures meant to provide a guide for patients and families in choosing healthcare services in their communities. 

Newsweek looked at data from 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries to compile their list. The final scores were based on surveys from medical experts, patient/doctor ratios, and patient satisfaction surveys, among other metrics. 

“Intermountain is honored to be included among this premier list of hospitals,” said Rob Allen, president and CEO of Intermountain Health. “It represents the tireless work of our caregivers and their focus on exceptional and compassionate patient care.” 

Intermountain Health has put a major focus on providing affordable care while increasing access to services for patients. Thanks to the expansion of telehealth, patients can now get the specialized care they need closer to home, regardless of their location.
