Intermountain Health Saint Joseph Hospital celebrated the opening of its newest cancer center, a major expansion that strengthens access to coordinated, comprehensive oncology care for patients throughout Colorado.  

Designed over the past year with significant patient feedback, the new center reflects Intermountain Health’s commitment to creating a more comfortable and intuitive experience for individuals navigating cancer treatment.  

The space brings all major oncology services into one central location and offers expanded treatment capacity, updated clinical technology, and a layout tailored to patient needs.  

“Our goal was to build a space that reflects the dignity, comfort, and coordinated support every patient deserves,” said Sarah Pike, oncology service line director at Intermountain Health Saint Joseph Hospital. “By expanding our treatment areas and bringing services together in one place, we’re able to provide more seamless, patient-centered care.”  

As the design came together, Pike said the team focused heavily on how patients move through their care.  

“This center was designed with our patients’ voices at the heart of every decision. Every design choice, from the layout of the infusion bays to the flow between clinics, was made to reduce stress and improve comfort,” she said. “Cancer care is complex, but the experience shouldn’t feel overwhelming.”  

The new space includes two treatment and procedure rooms, eight additional infusion bays with private and semiprivate options, an expanded rehabilitation gym, and an additional mammography machine. The breast surgery clinic has also moved to the same floor as breast imaging, creating a more efficient and coordinated experience for breast cancer patients.  

The celebration also included Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera and leaders from the Colorado Cancer Coalition and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, who introduced Colorado’s new Five-Year Cancer Plan. 

“This facility represents hope, innovation, and the very best in cancer care for our community,” said Colorado Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera. “Addressing cancer is deeply personal to me, as I have been diagnosed with four different cancers, on four separate occasions, so I understand firsthand the challenges that patients and their loved ones face medically, financially, emotionally and spiritually.”  

Intermountain Health clinical leaders highlighted how the expanded center will strengthen cancer care across the region.  

“This is an exciting moment, not just for our team, but for every patient and family we serve,” said Kevin Dryanski, oncology service line director for Intermountain Health’s Peaks Region in Colorado. “Our mission is to continually elevate the standard of care. By expanding our space and capabilities, we’re better equipped than ever to support patients throughout every stage of their cancer journey.”  

Dryanski added that the new center positions Saint Joseph Hospital as a strong partner in statewide cancer care.  

“This expansion strengthens cancer care not just at Saint Joseph Hospital, but across the entire Intermountain Health region,” he said. “It allows us to meet growing demand while improving coordination across our oncology programs.”  The new cancer center began seeing patients Feb. 24.

La atención oncológica innovadora de Intermountain Cedar City Hospital está ayudando a un hombre del sur de Utah a superar un diagnóstico de cáncer y le da esperanzas para el futuro.

El habitante de New Harmony, Gary Hugie, de 88 años, conoce de primera mano cómo este método puede marcar una diferencia.

Hugie se niega a que el diagnóstico de cáncer de colon e hígado lo desaliente de alcanzar sus metas para la vida. Él tiene en la mira llegar a los 100 años, acampar más a menudo y valorar el tiempo con su familia.

La bomba Intera 3000 HAI, la única bomba implantable aprobada por la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA, por sus siglas en inglés), administra la quimioterapia directo en la arteria hepática para garantizar un tratamiento dirigido contra los tumores del hígado.

La bomba se implanta por vía quirúrgica debajo de la piel en la zona baja del abdomen y se alimenta del calor corporal en lugar de baterías, lo que permite la administración continua del medicamento sin falla mecánica.

“En algunos casos, la HAIP puede abrir la puerta a oportunidades para las terapias definitivas como la cirugía, al tiempo que puede permitir a los pacientes mantener una mejor calidad de vida con menos dependencia de la quimioterapia sistémica”, explicó Bryce Perkins, DO, un especialista en cáncer de Intermountain Cedar City Cancer Center.

El Dr. Perkins introdujo a Hugie a la HAIP después de que el cáncer de colon se propagara al hígado.

La quimioterapia ya le había pasado afectado mientras él luchaba contra la debilidad y el dolor que suele acompañar a la quimioterapia contra el cáncer de hígado. Se necesitó la colaboración de los empleados de Intermountain Cedar City Hospital, un paciente con espíritu luchador, una familia cariñosa y el trabajo innovador de los empleados de dos establecimientos de Intermountain Health para hacer de este tratamiento una realidad.

Este tratamiento innovador comenzó con personal médico de Intermountain colaborando desde diferentes partes del estado.

El Dr. Perkins es uno de los pocos oncólogos de Intermountain en Utah con la experiencia en implantación de dispositivos HAIP. Trabajó de cerca con Ivan Zendejas, MD, de Intermountain Medical Center en Murray, Utah, para determinar si el paciente cumplía con los requisitos para una HAIP.

El apoyo para Hugie en el tratamiento comenzó con su familia. Recibió una ayuda extraordinaria de parte de su bella esposa, Dorothy, de 67 años, y sus cinco hijos.

Desde el momento en que comenzó a sentirse mal en un viaje de campamento tras el cual recibió su diagnóstico, pasando por la cirugía de colon, la quimioterapia y las citas médicas, todos han estado al lado de su padre, viéndolo luchar esta batalla.

Después de que le quitaran varias pulgadas de colon durante la cirugía, el cáncer se propagó hasta el hígado y se dificultó la quimioterapia.

“Estaba generándole algunos efectos secundarios graves, así que fue entonces cuando decidimos que la bomba podría ser la alternativa”, dijo Darsena Meeder, hija de Hugie.

Hugie contó que recibir sus tratamientos cerca de casa cada dos semanas marcó toda la diferencia para la decisión de continuar recibiendo estos tratamientos que alteran la vida.

Hugie ha visto una mejoría en su calidad de vida y presenta menos efectos secundarios graves. La HAIP también sirvió para controlar el crecimiento del cáncer en el hígado.

Si bien Hugie sabe que es posible que deba regresar a una quimioterapia más fuerte como parte de este plan de tratamiento, sigue estando agradecido por la oportunidad de tener estos momentos para dedicarse a sus objetivos.

“Agradezco al Dr. Perkins y todo su personal en Intermountain Health por el trabajo maravilloso que están haciendo”, dijo Hugie.

El Dr. Perkins, junto con el equipo de oncología de Intermountain Cedar City Center y sus compañeros en Intermountain Medical Center han estado buscando renovar la esperanza de los pacientes, como el uso de HAIP para representar un avance significativo en el tratamiento oncológico.

School may be out for summer, but that didn’t stop teens receiving cancer treatment at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital from enjoying one of the biggest traditions of high school – prom night.

Because some young cancer patients aren’t always well enough to go to their high school prom, caregivers at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital brought a special prom night to them. This year’s theme was The Wizard of OZ.

Patients aged 15 and up were able to dress up in formal attire and dance the night away on Saturday night in the Eccles Outpatient Services Building at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital, thanks to dedicated caregivers at the hospital who didn’t want health challenges to disrupt a treasured high-school tradition for the kids.

Intermountain Health cancer center caregivers converted conference rooms into a sparkling dance hall, complete with food, a DJ, prom photos, and many other experiences thanks to community generosity.

They also arranged for patients to receive special salon services in their hospital rooms to help them look and feel their best for their special night.

Patients were joined by Intermountain Primary Children’s doctors, nurses, child life specialists, and other teams of caregivers, who did their best to keep up with the energetic crowd.

“Cancer robs children of the many experiences that make up a childhood because they’re going through treatment,” said Caroline Dolan, a social worker at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital. “Our team at Primary Children’s knows how important it is in the healing process for kids to have normal experiences, and that’s why they work so hard to make this prom special.”

Every day, Intermountain Primary Children’s oncology experts treat 33 kids in inpatient areas and 60 more kids needing cancer-related outpatient visits.

The nationally ranked cancer program at Intermountain Primary Children’s includes the latest research and treatment for non-malignant blood disorders like sickle-cell anemia, as well as bone marrow transplants, gene-based therapies, and clinical trials.

Intermountain Health ofrece ahora una expansión pionera a nivel nacional de la terapia con células CAR-T, acercando tratamientos oncológicos de vanguardia a los pacientes del sur de Utah y Nevada.

La nueva clínica satélite de terapia con células CAR-T de Intermountain en St. George marca un logro significativo en la mejora del acceso a terapias con células CAR-T aprobadas por la Administración de alimentos y medicamentos (FDA, por sus siglas en inglés), y es la primera vez en Estado Unidos en que la recolección de células CAR-T está disponible en un sitio remoto, lejos de un centro de tratamiento primario.

Jacqueline, de 68 años, oriunda de Las Vegas, Nevada, recibió terapia por células CAR-T para tratar el linfoma no Hodgkin que padecía en el LDS Hospital de Intermountain y dice que le salvó la vida.

“Fue algo milagroso”, dijo Jacqueline. “Al mirar a la parte posterior de mi garganta podía ver los nódulos linfáticos muy inflamados, y luego, en cuestión de dos semanas de tratamiento, de repente, desaparecieron. Hasta me hicieron escáneres y todo había desaparecido”.

Jacqueline y su esposo tenían que viajar a Salt Lake en numerosas ocasiones y quedarse por un mes; dicen que la nueva clínica satélite de terapia con células CAR-T en St. George les ahorrará millas y que será bueno para que futuros pacientes oncológicos reciban tratamiento “a la vuelta de la esquina”.

Intermountain Health is now offering a national first-of-its kind expansion of CAR-T Cell Therapy, bringing cutting-edge cancer care closer to patients in Southern Utah and Nevada.

Intermountain’s new CAR-T Cell satellite clinic in St. George marks a significant milestone to improve access to FDA approved CAR T-cell therapies at a regional clinic – and is the first time in the United States that CAR T-Cell collections are now available at a remote site away from a primary treatment center.

Before expanding the CAR T-Cell therapy program, patients in southwest Utah, Nevada and beyond, had to travel hundreds of miles to Intermountain LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City for collection, transplant, and follow-up care.

This innovative expansion of stem cell collection and CAR T-cell collection procedures at the Intermountain Health St. George Cancer Center provides advanced cancer treatment options closer to home for patients in the region.

"Expanding CAR-T Cell Therapy to Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital is a testament to our commitment to providing accessible, state-of-the-art cancer treatment,” said Brad Hunter, MD, medical oncologist and director of the CAR T-cell program at Intermountain LDS Hospital. “This clinic will significantly enhance the quality of care for patients in Southern Utah and beyond our state boarders, offering them hope and healing without the need to travel long distances."

CAR-T Cell Therapy is a form of immunotherapy that harnesses the power of a patient's own immune system to fight cancer by genetically reprogramming T-cells to target and destroy cancer cells.

“This therapy has shown remarkable success in treating certain types of leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and we’re grateful for the chance to make it more accessible,” said Dr. Hunter.

This process is customized to each individual oncology patient and involves collecting the patient’s immune cells or T cells, which are then sent to a different location and re-engineered.

About two to three weeks later the patient will travel to Intermountain LDS Hospital for the re-programmed cells to be transplanted back to the patient. The new cells then target and kill the cancer cells by binding to the specific proteins or antigens on the cancer cells.

The patient is observed to confirm the treatment is working and then sent home, with follow up appoints close to home.

Jacqueline, 68, from Las Vegas, Nevada, received CAR-T therapy for her Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last year at Intermountain LDS Hospital and says it saved her life.

“It was really miraculous,” said Jacqueline. “I could see the back of my throat and see the lymph nodes, so swelled up and then within two weeks of the treatment, all of a sudden, they were just gone. They even scanned me and everything was gone.”

Jacqueline and her husband had to travel to Salt Lake numerous times and stay for a month, they say the new Intermountain Health St. George CAR-T Cell satellite clinic will save some miles and will be nice for future cancer patients to have treatment, “just down the street.”

CAR T-Cell therapy is currently FDA approved for patients who have a variety of hematologic cancers, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), B-cell lymphomas, and multiple myeloma.

Intermountain Health is the first health system in the nation to use a new innovative tool that uses a 3D computer model to guide surgeons during robotic rectal cancer surgery making the procedure more effective and accurate for cancer patients.

The new technology, called Iris, converts preoperative MRI images into a 3D model that shows the anatomy and location of the tumor in relation to other organs and structures to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of the surgical procedure.

Tae Kim, MD, a colorectal surgeon at Intermountain LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, was the first physician to use the Iris technology for a rectal robotic surgery.

“The benefit of this technology is like having a 3D map before you go into a maze,” said Dr. Kim. "You will know when and where you can be fast and efficient, as well as when and where you have to go slow and deliberate to make sure you get all the cancer."

Intermountain Health is now just one of two health systems in the nation – and the only one in Utah - approved to use this new technology.

For cancer patients, the 3D model helps them better understand the complexity of the anatomy and the surgical procedure. Dr. Kim now uses the model for his preoperative visits with his patients to explain the procedure.

"It's a very powerful tool to educate the patients and to reassure them that we have a very clear plan," Dr. Kim said.

One of Dr. Kim's patients who benefited from the technology was Tom Evans, a 50-year-old schoolteacher from Riverton, Utah.

Evans had been diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in 2022, and he was now facing a recurrence of the cancer. He had already undergone a round of chemotherapy and radiation when he was told he needed surgery to remove the tumor.

The new 3D technology allowed Dr. Kim to map out what he would find during the March 14, 2024, surgery at Intermountain LDS Hospital – and to remove the tumor with extreme precision.

Evans said he was excited when Dr. Kim told him, "We got all of the cancer."

The surgery took five hours and involved using robotics, which required Dr. Kim to sit at a computer console to manipulate the robotic arms and view the 3D images.

"Tom, do you care if I nerd out with you for a minute?" Dr. Kim asked him after the surgery.

He then proceeded to show him how the cancer came very close to his bladder and how the technology gave him the confidence and assurance to avoid damaging it.

"It was remarkable," Evans said afterward.

At the time Evans didn’t realize he was making history.

“About a month later after my procedure, Dr. Kim let me know I was the first person in the world to receive this groundbreaking technology,” said Evans. “I was taken aback, awestruck, and humbled to have the benefits of this procedure, which did make a difference.”

With the use of robotics, recovery time is typically shorter, so Evans was able to return home two days later and is now looking forward to getting back to his students and teaching.

Evans is also looking forward to more walks and hikes with his seven children, ages 6 to 25.

He said he is fortunate and blessed to have this technology available at Intermountain LDS Hospital, which was approved just three days before his surgery.

"I'm very grateful and I'm sure the 500th person will be grateful too to have a better quality of life," Evans said.

Evans urges people to get screened for colon cancer, which is often undetectable and considered a silent killer.

"Make sure you get checked, see your doctor, and get your colonoscopies," Evans advised.
