St. Mary’s Medical Center Achieves Magnet® Recognition

Magnet recognition is the nation’s top honor for nursing excellence

St. Mary's Medical Center Magnet 2022

St. Mary’s Medical Center has achieved the prestigious Magnet recognition as a demonstration of its commitment to nursing professionalism in a collaborative, inter-professional culture. The Magnet Recognition® Program, administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, distinguishes organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence and are able to consistently deliver excellence in patient care.

St. Mary’s has also received additional recognition in the form of five Magnet Exemplar accolades. Magnet® Exemplars are stories that highlight excellence in nursing practice with positive outcomes. They showcase nurses' contributions to high quality and patient-centered care. Being recognized as exemplars in five different inpatient and outpatient categories means that St. Mary’s has outperformed the majority of other organizations through these outstanding examples of best practice.

“Earning Magnet recognition is an honor that reaffirms St. Mary’s  culture that values the integral role that nurses play in caring for our community every day,” said Michelle Shiao, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President, Patient Care Services at St. Mary’s. “This process was both rigorous and thorough for all involved—from the bedside nurse clinicians to the department leaders, executive team, and members of the board of directors.”

Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and the communities they serve including improved patient safety, higher patient satisfaction and higher job satisfaction among nurses.

“Magnet designation is an impressive and important distinction for our organization and associates as well as the communities we serve,'' said Bryan Johnson, President of St. Mary’s Medical  Center. “Our entire team can be proud of this historic distinction.”

Magnet recognition is the gold standard for nursing excellence and is a factor when the public judges health care organizations. To achieve Magnet accreditation, St. Mary’s passed a rigorous and lengthy process over several years that required widespread participation from every discipline and across every level of the organization. The process included submission of an electronic application, written patient care documentation, a virtual site visit and review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.
