Introducing Elizabeth A. Joy, MD, MPH

The Orthopedic Specialty Group welcomes Dr. Elizabeth Joy, a board-certified doctor practicing family medicine and sports medicine at our Salt Lake City location. Dr. Joy is also Intermountain Healthcare’s Senior Outcomes Researcher for Clinical Programs.

Dr. Joy completed the Family Medicine Residency and Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From 1992 to 1996, she practiced family and sports medicine with MinnHealth Family Physicians in St. Paul.

After moving to Salt Lake City, Dr. Joy developed and directed the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Utah from 1999-2010. She also served as one of the University of Utah Team Physicians and is currently an Associate Professor at the university’s Department of Family and Preventive Medicine

In 2007, Dr. Joy completed a master’s degree in Public Health at the University of Utah and was named its “Public Health Student of the Year”.

Dr. Joy is on the Editorial Board for The Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine and is Associate Editor for Current Sports Medicine Reports. She serves on the Exercise Is Medicine Task Force for the American College of Sports Medicine and is also on the American Heart Association’s Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism Committee. Additionally, Dr. Joy serves as Vice President for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and has held two terms of office on the Board of Trustees for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

Dr. Joy has authored many journal articles and textbook chapters on a wide variety of topics in sports medicine. Her research interests lie in the areas of physical activity assessment and promotion, practice-based research in primary care, the Female Athlete Triad, and sports injury prevention.
