ExpressCare: Increase in Flu and Flu-Related Illness

DISEASE UPDATE - January 3, 2011

Updated reports are showing an increase in influenza and related illnesses in Utah. GermWatch reports show that RSV activity is increasing notably, with 59 isolates last week (up from 26). Intense influenza A activity continues, with 117 isolates last week, and representing a mix of seasonal H3N2 and 2009 H1N1. Influenza B activity has also picked up, with 8 isolates last week. The CDC has not detected any resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir and zanamivir) amongst the influenza A and B isolates tested thus far this season. We are also experiencing moderate to intense activity of parainfluenza (types 2 and 3) and adenovirus.
