Cochran Family Award

Wheat Ridge, CO - The annual Cochran Family Award celebration was delayed this year, but no one wanted to cancel. Dr. Jack Cochran was on hand to give praise and thanks to one winner and all nominees recently, for the 31st year.

The event was still delightful and celebratory with social-distancing, masks and a virtual audience.

Dr. Cochran presented the Cochran Oncology Nursing Scholarship Award to Tammy White-Uecker, RN, Oncology Nurse Navigator. His remarks follow:

“Tammy started at Lutheran in 2012 as a nurse navigator in the Breast Care Center, and an RN in Radiation/Oncology. She moved to the General Cancer Navigator position in 2018.

“Her peers describe her as authentic, optimistic and open-minded in her approach to her patients and her peers. She is deeply committed to the care of the Oncology patient and their families, always going the extra mile to make sure the patients have what they need.

“There are countless examples of how Tammy has enriched the lives of her patients. Recently a patient’s wife wrote a heartfelt letter thanking her for the care she provided to her late husband, one of many she has received. Both patients and physicians benefit from her thorough support and knowledge of the individual cases and care plans.

“Tammy recently went over to the Sloan’s Lake clinic to meet a newly diagnosed patient. This patient was nervous and needed extra support for her appointment. Tammy cleared her schedule and was there for the patient going beyond what is expected.

“Tammy is soon taking her OCN that was delayed by COVID, and while waiting to sit for her certification continues to seek out opportunities to grow her knowledge base through CEUs, consulting with peers and reading countless articles. She is an excellent role model for her team, always showing respect and concern for others, and not setting limits on what is possible with the care and services that are provided to all our oncology patients.”

This year, several Cancer Center members were also nominated for the award:

  • Cynthia Beverly, Front Office Data Specialist, Radiation Oncology
  • Karen Nenno, PharmD, BCPS, BCOP, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist
  • Judith Nolan, RN, BSN, OCN, Internal Medicine/Oncology Unit
  • Janette O’Brien, Program Coordinator, Oncology Service Line
  • Lynn O’Toole-Miller, BSN, RN, CMSRN, Internal Medicine/Oncology Unit

Thanks also to the Lutheran Medical Center Foundation for their support of this award and Lutheran’s oncology and hospital patients.
